Spoilers for the season 2 finale and season 3, which had aired by October 4, 2026. Season 2 ends before the Battle of the Gullet, with both sides mobilizing for a wider war. Alicent offers Rhaenyra a path into King’s Landing at the cost of Aegon, Daemon renews his allegiance to Rhaenyra, and the closing montage shows forces preparing to fight. The finale is a turning point and a launchpad, not a battlefield resolution.
What happens at the end of season 2?
Alicent secretly travels to Dragonstone and asks Rhaenyra to take King’s Landing while Aemond is away. Her proposed settlement is to surrender Aegon. Alicent has come to accept that Rhaenyra’s claim may mean her son’s death, but the offer is not a simple peace agreement: Rhaenyra stresses what killing Aegon would mean, and the wider conflict cannot be ended by the two women’s private decision alone. Sky’s finale coverage describes Alicent as accepting the possibility that Rhaenyra would have to kill her son.
The visit changes the personal relationship between Alicent and Rhaenyra, but it does not remove the other loyalties, armies, and political stakes driving the war. Rhaenyra still has to contend with Aemond and the forces aligned with him.
Why does Daemon return to Rhaenyra’s side?
At Harrenhal, Daemon experiences a vision that gives him a broader perspective on his choices and brings him back into alignment with Rhaenyra. The prophetic imagery connects the family struggle to the larger threat foreshadowed in Game of Thrones. It is best read as a shift in Daemon’s understanding and allegiance, not as a key that literally explains every image or settles every question about the prophecy. What does the closing montage mean?
The montage cuts between the Greens and Blacks as their forces move toward conflict, then returns to Rhaenyra and Alicent in separate, reflective moments. It shows preparation and consequence rather than a completed military outcome. Director Geeta Vasant Patel said the finale needed an emotional punch and described Rhaenyra as inheriting the burden of war after Alicent leaves it behind, according to the Los Angeles Times.
That emphasis makes the ending feel deliberately suspended: the women have reached a personal turning point, while the armies and claims that surround them remain unresolved. Showrunner Ryan Condal characterized the season as “the march to war,” with the fuses lit for the next phase, in Sky’s finale coverage.

Why wasn’t the Battle of the Gullet in the season 2 finale?
The Battle of the Gullet was the major clash viewers were being led toward, but it does not happen in season 2. In August 2024, Condal said the finale stopped at the brink and that the battle was being held for season 3 so the production could give it the scale and time it required. TVLine’s interview with Condal explains that decision. The result is a finale built around mobilization and character choices rather than the battle itself.
What happened to the war after season 2?
By October 4, 2026, season 3 had aired and advanced the conflict. Its finale included the Battle of Tumbleton, the deaths of Ormund Hightower and Roderick Dustin, and Helaena’s death. Aegon and Aemond formed a plan to take back the Iron Throne, leaving the struggle against Rhaenyra unresolved. TechRadar’s season 3 finale explainer reports those events.

So season 2’s ending points toward open war, but it does not tell the whole story. Season 3 shows that major losses do not settle the succession fight; the Green brothers remain intent on reclaiming the throne. Season 4 events remain future story, not aired outcomes.
