In Season 2, Episode 7, Rhaenyra’s effort to recruit dragonseeds turns into a brutal test of who can survive a dragon’s choosing. Hugh claims Vermithor, Ulf claims Silverwing, and the new riders give Rhaenyra greater strength—along with a difficult question about how much control she can expect over the people and power she has gathered.
Episode 7 details
“The Red Sowing” is the seventh episode of House of the Dragon Season 2. Rotten Tomatoes lists its air date as July 28, 2024 (episode listing). Warner Bros. Discovery’s official synopsis describes two parallel moves: “As Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) looks to gain an advantage by unusual means, Daemon (Matt Smith) pressures a young liege lord to raise up his bannermen” (Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom).
What happens in “The Red Sowing”?
Rhaenyra turns dragonseeds into a strategy
After Addam of Hull bonds with Seasmoke, Rhaenyra has to face what that bond means: a dragon has chosen a rider outside the royal line. Addam wants to serve her, and his claim gives her a reason to look beyond the established Targaryen riders. She brings potential dragonseeds—people with Targaryen ancestry—into a perilous attempt to find others a dragon will accept.
The sowing claims lives before it produces riders
The candidates are exposed to dragons, but ancestry does not guarantee a bond or even survival. Vermithor attacks those unable to escape. When Hugh draws the dragon’s attention away from a woman in danger, he is caught in the encounter that ends with Vermithor accepting him as a rider. The sequence makes the cost of Rhaenyra’s plan impossible to treat as an abstraction: she is creating a chance for new allies by putting ordinary people within reach of lethal force.

Ulf’s path to a dragon is less deliberate. He flees the violence through the caves and encounters Silverwing, who accepts him. The unexpected flight carries him over King’s Landing, turning a panicked escape into a public display of the new rider and his dragon.

Daemon keeps pressing the Riverlands
Away from the dragon-seed effort, Daemon continues his Riverlands campaign. He pressures a young liege lord to raise bannermen, a political and military thread that sits in deliberate contrast with Rhaenyra’s urgent bid to expand her air power.
Who claims Vermithor and Silverwing?
Hugh claims Vermithor, while Ulf claims Silverwing. Addam’s earlier bond with Seasmoke is the event that helps set Rhaenyra’s recruitment effort in motion. Together, the three riders change the balance of what Rhaenyra can field, but they do not make her position simple: she has gained powerful allies whose origins and loyalties do not fit neatly into the old order.
Does the episode earn its spectacle?
The Red Sowing is the episode’s dramatic center, and its suspense comes from the uncertainty of each encounter: a candidate may be ignored, accepted, or killed. Hugh’s claim emerges from a moment of protection and danger; Ulf’s follows a flight into the caves and an encounter he did not plan. Those different routes make the new riders feel like people caught up in a risky political gamble, rather than interchangeable pieces added to a military tally.

The quieter Riverlands plot gives the hour a useful counterpoint. Daemon’s effort to assemble bannermen is a familiar exercise in pressure and allegiance; Rhaenyra’s scheme is more visceral, asking whether ancestry and opportunity can be converted into a force she can trust. The episode’s spectacle has consequence because the new strength comes at a visible human cost and leaves the question of control unresolved.
The Guardian characterized the episode as “ferocious and explosive TV” in its review headline (The Guardian review). That description suits the force of the central sequence, while the episode’s sharper idea is the tension beneath it: Rhaenyra may need dragonriders she did not choose from the old ruling circle, and that need could reshape the very hierarchy she seeks to defend.
