Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3. “The Burning Mill” brings the Blackwood–Bracken feud into the Targaryen succession war, while Daemon’s arrival at Harrenhal gives the Blacks a new military foothold. On Dragonstone, Rhaenyra and Rhaenys weigh whether the conflict can still be restrained.

What is the official title of Season 2, Episode 3?

The episode is officially titled “The Burning Mill.” Warner Bros. Discovery lists it as Season 2, Episode 3, written for television by David Hancock and directed by Geeta Vasant Patel. Its listed U.S. debut was Sunday, June 30, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom

Why does the Riverlands feud become part of the war?

The episode opens with the long-running rivalry between Houses Blackwood and Bracken. Their local border dispute becomes entangled with the succession struggle: the Blackwoods are aligned with Rhaenyra, while the Brackens support Aegon. A conflict rooted in old grievances is therefore drawn into the wider fight over who should rule. The Washington Post

The episode’s title points to the Burning Mill and the battle associated with it. The Washington Post’s recap describes the feud escalating and then moves to the aftermath rather than recounting a detailed battle sequence. The emphasis is on how the dispute becomes another consequence of the rival claims, not on a fully described battlefield set piece. The Washington Post

Why are the Riverlands and Harrenhal strategic targets?

The Riverlands matter because an army moving through or securing the region can strengthen a faction’s position in the war. Contemporary recaps describe Criston Cole planning a move toward the Riverlands and Harrenhal, making the area more than the setting for the Blackwood–Bracken feud. TVLine Sky

Harrenhal is the immediate prize in Daemon’s storyline. The official synopsis says he arrives there to raise an army for the Blacks. That gives Rhaenyra’s side a chance to build forces in a strategically important part of the realm, even as the Greens’ plans also point toward the region. Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom

Does Rhaenyra try to prevent a wider war?

Yes. Rhaenyra remains wary of further escalation and attempts to reach Alicent, seeking a way to avert more bloodshed. The Washington Post characterizes the effort as unsuccessful: it does not change the episode’s movement toward war. That is the recap’s reading of the dramatic turn, rather than proof that peace was within reach. The Washington Post

At Dragonstone, Rhaenys also urges restraint as old grudges flare again. Her counsel and Rhaenyra’s attempt at contact with Alicent set diplomacy against the military decisions unfolding elsewhere. Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom

What changes by the end of the episode?

  • The Blackwood–Bracken feud is no longer merely a local dispute; the houses’ opposing loyalties connect it to the succession war.
  • The Riverlands become a focus of military planning for both factions, with Harrenhal especially important to the Blacks’ effort to raise an army.
  • Rhaenyra’s attempt to reach Alicent fails to alter the momentum toward conflict, while Rhaenys’s appeal for restraint underscores the cost of escalation.

Together, these developments frame the episode around a widening war: dynastic allegiance pulls an old regional feud into the conflict, while control of the Riverlands and Harrenhal becomes part of the struggle for military strength.
