Full spoilers for Season 2, Episode 3, “The Burning Mill.” Rhaenyra tries to open a path to peace with Alicent, but the episode shows how little room remains for private understanding amid old feuds, rival claims and military maneuvering. The effort does not stop the violence gathering around them.
What happens in “The Burning Mill”?
Season 2, Episode 3, “The Burning Mill,” first aired June 30, 2024. David Hancock wrote the episode and Geeta Vasant Patel directed it, according to the Warner Bros. Discovery Pressroom. Its central contrast is between attempts to restrain the conflict and the momentum of violence already set in motion.
How does an old feud become a battle?
In the Riverlands, the inherited Bracken–Blackwood feud erupts into deadly fighting at the Burning Mill. The official synopsis describes “ancient grudges” resurfacing; TV Guide’s episode guide likewise frames the battle as the result of a dispute between the houses. The clash makes the conflict tangible beyond the royal family: local hostility can turn into factional bloodshed even before the leading claimants make their next formal move.
Why does Daemon go to Harrenhal?
While Criston Cole proposes taking Harrenhal, Daemon reaches the castle first. Its castellan, Ser Simon Strong, pledges allegiance to the Blacks, giving Rhaenyra’s side a strategic foothold. Daemon’s move also sits uneasily beside Rhaenyra’s interest in restraint: he acts to strengthen her cause, but on his own initiative.

A warning in the castle
Harrenhal’s atmosphere turns Daemon’s arrival into something more ominous. He dreams of a young Rhaenyra sewing Jaehaerys’s severed head onto his body, then meets Alys, who foretells that he will die at Harrenhal, as TV Guide recounts. The episode presents this as a disturbing vision and prophecy, not confirmation of what will happen.
What does Rhaenyra do to protect her family and gather information?
Rhaenyra sends her younger children and dragon eggs away for safety, assigning Rhaena to escort them. The decision is protective, but it also gives Rhaena responsibility at a moment when the family’s future is under threat.

Rhaenyra also makes a pact with Mysaria: she gives her a place at court in exchange for intelligence about the Red Keep, according to TVLine’s recap. It is a practical step toward understanding the rival court, rather than a resolution of the political divide.
How do the rival courts push events toward war?
In King’s Landing, Aegon elevates Larys as Master of Whisperers. Aegon also encounters Aemond at a brothel and mocks his brother, showing how personal antagonism runs alongside the struggle for power. Elsewhere, Baela’s patrol spots Criston moving toward Harrenhal, while Rhaenyra’s councilors press her to use dragons in the war. These choices turn political rivalry into military calculation.

Does Rhaenyra’s attempt to reach Alicent bring peace?
No. Rhaenyra makes a last-ditch effort to find a way to peace with her former friend, but the conversation fails to alter the conflict’s direction. The Washington Post’s June 30, 2024 recap describes the effort as sputtering out, with the story left on a path toward war.
That failure does not prove peace is impossible in every sense. It shows that personal history alone cannot undo the damage, loyalties and incentives that now surround the two women. The Burning Mill has already demonstrated how quickly inherited hostility can become lethal; Daemon’s move and the councils’ demands add fresh momentum. Rhaenyra and Alicent may still understand one another, but understanding is not enough to stop those forces.
