The possible clue is Helaena’s earlier fear of rats. Later, a ratcatcher named Cheese uses the Red Keep’s rat routes to reach the royal chambers, where Jaehaerys is killed. The echo can look like ominous foreshadowing, but the episode coverage does not establish that Helaena explicitly predicted the murder.
What is the possible Helaena prophecy?
In “A Son for a Son,” Helaena says earlier in the episode that she is afraid of rats, according to TV Guide’s recap. Later, Cheese—a ratcatcher familiar with the Red Keep—helps the intruders get into the royal quarters. That pairing gives the line a disturbing second meaning after the attack.
It is safest to call the rat remark possible foreshadowing, or a line viewers may read as prophetic in retrospect. The available episode account does not show that Helaena names the intruders, predicts Jaehaerys’s death, or knowingly warns anyone what is coming. It also does not establish the exact audio or subtitle wording, so the recap’s paraphrase should not be treated as a verified quotation.

When Cheese asks Helaena to identify the boy, she points to Jaehaerys. She escapes with Jaehaera and reaches Alicent’s chambers. Jaehaerys—not Aemond—is killed.
Who were the assassins supposed to kill?
Showrunner Ryan Condal told TV Guide that Daemon intended the assassins to target Aemond. Condal explained that killing him would both avenge Lucerys and remove Vhagar’s rider, a strategic advantage because Vhagar is the largest dragon. The plan’s intended target therefore differs from its actual victim.
Condal also said the pause after Cheese asks what to do if they cannot find Aemond was intentional and suggested that a contingency may have been given. That comment concerns Daemon’s plan; it does not confirm that Helaena foresaw the attack.
How does the scene differ from Fire & Blood?
The television scene changes important details from the book account, as described by The Ringer and Sky. Keep the book version separate from what appears in the episode:

| Children present | The twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera are in the scene. | Helaena is with three children, including Maelor. |
| Helaena’s predicament | The scene has her identify one of the twins. | Helaena is forced to choose between her sons, a choice The Ringer characterizes as “Sophie’s Choice.” |
| Outcome relevant to the target | Daemon’s intended target is Aemond; Jaehaerys is killed. | The cited comparisons describe the book scene as a forced choice involving Helaena’s sons; they do not establish a screen-style rat clue. |
The book comparison can clarify why the adaptation feels different, but it cannot prove what Helaena’s rat remark means in the show.
How does this fit Helaena’s earlier remarks?
TV Guide also recalls Helaena’s “beast beneath the boards” remark, later associated with Rhaenys emerging through the floor at Aegon’s coronation, and her comment about Aemond riding a dragon with one eye closed, later linked to his lost eye. These are retrospective interpretations reported by the recap. They provide context for viewers who suspect Helaena’s unusual remarks can foreshadow events, but they do not make every such line a confirmed prophecy.
Rank #4
The episode’s rat detail works on the same interpretive level: the later events make the earlier line resonate, without the available account confirming that Helaena understood or foretold what was about to happen.
