Around that decision, the episode shows Rhaenyra pushing for a voice at court, Daemon forcing his brother to confront him, and Corlys pressing for action in the Stepstones.
What happens in “The Rogue Prince”?
The second episode of House of the Dragon is titled “The Rogue Prince.” Months after Queen Aemma’s death, King Viserys faces pressure from his council to remarry and shore up the succession. His choice becomes the episode’s central political decision, but several other conflicts reveal how the characters use family, marriage, and royal authority to pursue power.
At the small council, Lord Corlys Velaryon warns that the Crabfeeder and forces backed by the Free Cities are threatening the Stepstones. Corlys wants a forceful response; Viserys favors diplomacy and resists starting a war. Rhaenyra proposes using dragonriders, but the council does not take up her suggestion.
Why does Viserys consider Laena—and choose Alicent?
Corlys and his wife, Rhaenys, propose that Viserys marry their young daughter, Laena. The match would connect the crown with House Velaryon, whose power includes a fleet and Valyrian lineage. Viserys considers it, but is uneasy about the proposal.

At the same time, Viserys is growing close to Alicent Hightower, daughter of his Hand, Otto, and a friend of Rhaenyra. He ultimately announces that he will marry Alicent rather than Laena. The choice joins a personal attachment with a political consequence: Otto’s family gains proximity to the throne, while Corlys’s hoped-for royal alliance falls through. The episode leaves Rhaenyra dissatisfied and places strain on her friendship with Alicent.
How does Rhaenyra choose a Kingsguard knight?
Viserys gives Rhaenyra a role in selecting a new Kingsguard knight. Otto favors a candidate who could serve a political alliance, but Rhaenyra chooses Ser Criston Cole for his combat experience. Her decision is practical, yet the council’s response to her proposal about the Stepstones shows how readily her judgment is discounted.

Why does Daemon steal the dragon egg?
