Season 2, Episode 1 spoilers ahead. In “A Son for a Son,” Blood and Cheese enter the Red Keep intending to kill Aemond, but when they cannot find him, they force Helaena to identify one of her twin sons. Jaehaerys is killed. The scene turns on that shift in target—and on Helaena’s coerced decision, which actor Phia Saban described as an attempt to save a child rather than a free choice.
Why do Blood and Cheese kill Jaehaerys instead of Aemond?
In the television episode, Daemon sends Blood and Cheese into the Red Keep to kill Aemond, the rider of Vhagar who killed Rhaenyra’s son Luke. Removing Aemond would punish Luke’s killer and take Vhagar’s rider out of the war. But the assassins do not find him. They encounter Helaena and her twins instead, demand that she identify the boy, and kill Jaehaerys. Helaena escapes with Jaehaera.
The episode does not show Daemon giving a precise fallback instruction for the event that Aemond is absent. Showrunner Ryan Condal said he did not think Daemon sent the assassins with an explicit plan to murder a child from the outset: “I don’t think he sent them in with the express intent of murdering a child right out of the gate.” (TV Guide, June 17, 2024.) The pause after Cheese asks what they should do if they cannot find Aemond leaves the contingency unresolved; it is not evidence that Daemon specifically ordered Jaehaerys’s death in advance.
What did Helaena choose?
Helaena is threatened and made to identify which twin is the boy. Her action can look like a choice, but the scene gives her no safe option to refuse. Saban, who plays Helaena, said she did not believe Helaena had a real way to avoid identifying one of the twins under that threat. She framed the moment this way: “This is about saving a child’s life.” (TheWrap, June 17, 2024, reporting Saban’s remarks on the official House of the Dragon podcast.)

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That framing matters: Helaena is trying to protect a child in an impossible situation, not making an unconstrained decision about which child should die.
How the show stages the horror
Condal said the sequence begins from the intruders’ point of view and then shifts to Helaena’s, bringing the audience into her experience of the attack. “We just wanted to make the sequence subjective in that way, versus what’s in the book,” he told TheWrap on June 16, 2024. The shift helps make the scene’s reversal—Aemond is the intended target, but Jaehaerys becomes the victim—felt through Helaena’s perspective.

How “Blood and Cheese” differs in Fire & Blood
The television scene materially changes the book sequence; it is not just a shortened version. In George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, Daemon’s commission is described as “a son for a son,” and Blood and Cheese are tasked with killing one of Aegon’s sons. Helaena is forced to choose between her sons. She names Maelor, but the killers kill Jaehaerys. The show omits Maelor from the scene, makes Aemond the intended target, and forces Helaena to identify which twin is the boy.
| Story element | Season 2 television episode | Fire & Blood |
|---|---|---|
| Intended target | Aemond | One of Aegon’s sons |
| Helaena’s role | Identifies which twin is the boy | Chooses between her sons; the killers ignore her naming Maelor and kill Jaehaerys |
| Children in the scene | The twins, Jaehaerys and Jaehaera | Three children, including Maelor |
| Staging and point of view | The sequence shifts from the intruders’ perspective to Helaena’s | Condal described the show’s approach as subjective “versus what’s in the book” (TheWrap, June 16, 2024) |
Condal said practical and dramatic considerations shaped the adaptation. In TheWrap’s account, he cited the difficulty of realistically filming the book scene with very young child performers and said the team debated how to make it producible and dramatically satisfying. That is Condal’s explanation of the creative decision, not an independent legal assessment.
