This guide follows the television series through the Season 2 finale. It explains who is related to whom and how those relationships feed the rival claims; it does not merge the show’s story with the different historical account in George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood.
Who is related to whom in House of the Dragon?
The central family split begins with King Viserys I. His daughter Rhaenyra, born to his first wife Aemma Arryn, is named heir before he has a surviving son. After Aemma dies, Viserys marries Alicent Hightower, and their son Aegon II becomes the rival claimant backed by the Greens. Rhaenyra and Aegon II are half-siblings.
Viserys’s younger brother Daemon is Rhaenyra’s uncle. Daemon later marries her, joining the two Targaryen branches. His daughters with Laena Velaryon, Baela and Rhaena, are Rhaenyra’s cousins and stepdaughters; his children with Rhaenyra are their half-siblings.
The family tree through the Season 2 finale
- Baelon Targaryen and Alyssa Targaryen are the parents of Viserys I and Daemon, who are brothers.
- Viserys I and Aemma Arryn have Rhaenyra and a son who dies in infancy.
- Viserys I and Alicent Hightower have Aegon II, Helaena, and Aemond. The official Warner Bros. Discovery pressroom character-description excerpt also lists Daeron; the season-focused family-tree accounts cited here do not independently detail him.
- Rhaenys Targaryen, a cousin in Jaehaerys I’s line, marries Corlys Velaryon. Their children are Laenor and Laena.
- Laenor Velaryon and Rhaenyra are publicly presented as the parents of Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey. The show implies Harwin Strong is their biological father, making their public and implied biological parentage different.
- Daemon and Laena Velaryon have Baela and Rhaena.
- Daemon and Rhaenyra have Aegon the Younger and Viserys II. Their daughter Visenya is stillborn in the Season 1 account.
How is Daemon related to Rhaenyra?
Daemon is both Rhaenyra’s paternal uncle and, later, her husband. He and Viserys I are sons of Baelon and Alyssa Targaryen. When Daemon marries Rhaenyra, their children connect the line of Viserys and Aemma to Daemon’s descendants with Laena.

That means Baela and Rhaena are Rhaenyra’s cousins through Daemon’s brother Viserys, as well as her stepdaughters through their father’s marriage to her. Aegon the Younger and Viserys II are their half-brothers.
Are Aegon II and Rhaenyra siblings?
Yes. Rhaenyra is Viserys I and Aemma Arryn’s daughter; Aegon II is Viserys I and Alicent Hightower’s son. They share a father, making them half-siblings. Aegon II is not the same person as Aegon the Younger, Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son, who is later known as Aegon III.

Viserys’s other children with Alicent include Helaena and Aemond. Daeron is also listed in the official Warner Bros. Discovery pressroom character-description excerpt, though the detailed child lists in the season-focused explainers do not include him.
How are the Greens and Blacks related?
The Greens and Blacks are political factions within the extended royal family, not separate bloodlines. The Greens back Alicent’s son Aegon II; the Blacks support Rhaenyra, whom Viserys named heir. Their dispute becomes a succession conflict after Viserys dies and Alicent’s faction crowns Aegon II.

Genealogy explains the competing family claims, but it does not by itself settle which claim is politically legitimate. Viserys named Rhaenyra as heir; after his death, the Greens advanced Aegon II instead.
Why the Velaryons matter to the family tree
House Velaryon joins the Targaryen family through two marriages. Rhaenys marries Corlys, and their children Laenor and Laena marry into Viserys’s and Daemon’s branches. Laenor is Rhaenyra’s first husband, while Laena is Daemon’s second wife and the mother of Baela and Rhaena.

The show also makes parentage a point of tension: Jacaerys, Lucerys, and Joffrey are publicly recognized as Laenor’s sons, while Harwin Strong is implied to be their biological father. That implication should not be mistaken for an uncontested public relationship within the story.

- Aegon the Younger is Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son; he is later known as Aegon III.
- Viserys I is the king whose succession decision precedes the conflict.
- Viserys II is Rhaenyra and Daemon’s son.
How the television family tree differs from the book history
House of the Dragon adapts Targaryen history from Martin’s fictional history in Fire & Blood, but the television version and the book can differ. The relationships above describe the show through the Season 2 finale. For book context, Marie Claire discusses the source-book background: Marie Claire’s House of the Dragon family tree guide. Treat that as related context, not as a reason to silently substitute book continuity for the show’s portrayal.
