For a historically accurate look at Netflix U.S. between June 1 and August 31, 2018, separate films newly added during the season from titles already in the changing catalog. The clearest new horror and horror-adjacent choices were TAU, Scream 4, and Extinction, with Cargo arriving just before the meteorological summer window.
This is not a reconstruction of one official Netflix “summer horror” collection. Netflix availability varied by country, licensing deal, and date, so a film listed here for the U.S. in 2018 may not be available there—or anywhere on Netflix—now.

Cargo — zombie survival before summer officially began
Ben Howling and Yolanda Ramke’s Cargo premiered on Netflix on May 18, just ahead of the June 1–August 31 meteorological summer. Martin Freeman plays a father trying to protect his infant daughter after a pandemic leaves Australia overrun by infected survivors. It is more mournful survival drama than nonstop gore, making it a strong choice for viewers who want emotional stakes with their outbreak horror. The film’s release record documents its Netflix timing and zombie context.
TAU — claustrophobic smart-home menace
Added June 29, TAU follows Julia, who is imprisoned in an advanced automated house and forced to interact with its artificial-intelligence system. The premise puts technological control, isolation, and an unreliable environment ahead of supernatural scares. Contemporary 2018 schedules list its June 29 Netflix release. It belongs on a horror watchlist for viewers who enjoy contained, high-concept dread, but “science-fiction thriller with horror elements” is more precise than calling it straightforward horror. Scream 4 — the season’s unambiguous slasher
Scream 4 arrived on Netflix U.S. on July 7, making it the clearest conventional horror addition in the surviving summer schedules. Wes Craven’s sequel returns Sidney Prescott to Woodsboro for another Ghostface investigation, combining slasher violence with the franchise’s self-aware commentary on horror rules and remakes. Choose it when you want a recognizable killer, set-piece suspense, and a franchise continuation rather than ambiguous genre blending. The contemporary U.S. July schedule lists the addition.
Extinction — invasion anxiety rather than pure horror
Netflix released Extinction on July 27. Michael Peña plays a man whose recurring visions of an attack begin to look like warnings of an actual invasion. Some contemporary coverage called it a “sci-fi horror film,” while its premise and structure also fit speculative thriller. Labeling it horror-adjacent keeps the recommendation useful without pretending the genre boundary is settled. It is the best match here for viewers who want alien-threat tension, domestic panic, and apocalyptic uncertainty. Netflix-focused July coverage identifies its July 27 release.

What the summer schedule does—and does not—prove
Release calendars establish additions, not a complete day-by-day inventory of every horror movie in the U.S. catalog. A title already licensed to Netflix could remain available without appearing on a summer “new releases” list, while another could disappear during the season. For that reason, this guide avoids claiming to be a definitive list of every horror film streamable in the United States throughout summer 2018.

August was comparatively light for Netflix movie premieres. The available 2018 schedule highlights films such as Like Father, Perdida, The Package, and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, but does not establish a major new U.S. horror wave. That makes the four titles above more useful as a transparent, evidence-based snapshot than an inflated “top ten” list.
Films often placed in the wrong season
Several notable Netflix horror releases belong to autumn, not summer. Apostle premiered on October 12, 2018, and The Haunting of Hill House debuted the same day. They may be essential 2018 horror recommendations, but including them in a June–August list would confuse the calendar. How to read the labels
Straight horror here means slasher, zombie, supernatural, occult, creature, or survival-horror storytelling. Horror-adjacent covers science-fiction and psychological thrillers that create comparable fear, confinement, or menace. That distinction matters: promotional descriptions sometimes call a film “sci-fi horror,” but a reader choosing a traditional horror movie may reasonably expect something different from an invasion thriller.
