Team Cherry released Hollow Knight: Silksong on September 4, 2025, for PC and consoles through digital storefronts. The official Steam listing gives the release date and offers the game digitally.
What happened to the storefronts?
Players encountered trouble accessing stores, completing purchases, or downloading the game as demand surged. The Guardian reported disruption across Steam, Nintendo eShop, PlayStation Store, and Microsoft Store. Team Cherry later acknowledged that the volume of players was enough to crash storefronts, writing: “It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!).” The comment appeared in the developer’s holiday 2025 retrospective.
Steam: a sharp spike in reported problems
After the game’s 10 a.m. Eastern release, DownDetector recorded a sudden spike of more than 11,000 Steam problem reports, according to Ars Technica. That figure reflects user-submitted reports, not a count of confirmed outages or affected customers. Steam’s scale of disruption also coincided with exceptionally high interest: Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s launch-week data, reported by GamesRadar, put the game’s Steam peak at 587,150 concurrent players.

Nintendo eShop: purchase and download trouble
Nintendo eShop was among the storefronts reported to have trouble during the launch rush. Coverage described access, purchasing, or downloading problems, rather than establishing that every eShop user or region experienced the same failure.
PlayStation Store: distinguish a delayed listing from a store crash
Reports about PlayStation were mixed. The Guardian and TechRadar included PlayStation Store in accounts of broad storefront disruption, while Ars Technica reported that the PlayStation listing was still unavailable during its September 4 coverage. GamesRadar later described the PlayStation shop as relatively intact, with the listing arriving hours late. The evidence supports saying PlayStation access or listing availability was disrupted or delayed; it does not establish that the entire store crashed in the same way as Steam.

Could players buy or download Silksong?
The game was released digitally, but availability at the moment of launch depended on the storefront and on whether the problem affected browsing, checkout, or the download itself. The reports do not establish a single recovery time applicable to every store, region, or user. If a listing did not appear immediately, that could reflect a delayed product listing rather than a general storefront outage.
The official Steam page also presents the soundtrack as a digital product. The cited launch coverage verifies digital distribution; it does not establish a physical game edition or physical soundtrack release.

Why did so many stores struggle at once?
The clearest explanation is the unusually large rush of players trying to access and buy the game at release. Steam’s more than 11,000 DownDetector reports and the launch-week peak of 587,150 concurrent Steam players illustrate the scale of attention, while Team Cherry’s retrospective directly acknowledged the storefront impact. Those figures do not show that every platform failed identically: a store could have access or checkout problems, a download bottleneck, or simply a late-arriving game listing.
