For documentaries and independent films, check whether your library offers Kanopy or Hoopla. These services differ from one another: some offer on-demand catalogs, others emphasize live channels, and library platforms require institutional access. Catalogs, apps, and availability vary by location and can change, so check a service’s own listing for the movie you want.
Which Vumoo alternative should you try first?
For a broad, free on-demand catalog, try Tubi. Choose Pluto TV or Xumo Play if you prefer browsing live channels. Documentary and film enthusiasts should check Kanopy first, then Hoopla, if their public library or school participates. The Internet Archive is a specialist destination for archival and public-domain material, not a replacement for current Hollywood releases.
“Free” describes different access models below: advertising-supported viewing, borrowing through a library or school, selected free titles alongside rentals, or material that is lawfully available in an archive. A rental or purchase is not the same as free streaming.
| Service | Cost model | Ads | Access or account note | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tubi | Free | Yes | Tubi says it does not require payment or credit-card information; account details can vary by feature and platform. | Broad on-demand browsing |
| Pluto TV | Free | Yes | Account and availability details vary. | Live channels and on-demand movies |
| The Roku Channel | Free content; paid add-ons may also appear | Yes on free programming | Device and region availability vary. | Roku households and live channels |
| Plex | Free catalog; optional paid features | Yes on free catalog | Account is useful for features; personal-media setup is optional. | Free streaming plus a personal media library |
| Kanopy | Library or school access | Generally no conventional commercial ads | Participating institution and its login; limits may apply. | Documentaries, independent films, and classics |
| Hoopla | Library access | Generally no conventional commercial ads | Participating library card; borrowing limits vary. | Borrowing movies and other digital media |
| YouTube Movies | Selected free titles; rentals and purchases | Often on free titles | Account and payment may be needed for rentals or purchases. | Official movie uploads and title searches |
| Fandango at Home | Selected free titles; rentals and purchases | Free section may use ads | Account/payment for paid titles. | Free viewing when available, rental otherwise |
| Xumo Play | Free | Yes | Device and region availability vary. | Live-TV-style browsing |
| FilmRise | Free | Yes | Content may be spread across its site, apps, and partner platforms. | Older programming and genre titles |
| Fawesome | Free | Yes | App and regional availability vary. | Niche and independent browsing |
| Internet Archive | Free access to material hosted there | Usually not commercial-ad based | Check the rights status of the specific title. | Archival and public-domain cinema |

Tubi is the closest match here for someone who wants to search and browse a free movie catalog. It is ad-supported; Tubi says the service is free, legal, and does not require payment or credit-card information. Its About Tubi information explains the advertising model, while its welcome page provides service and location information.

Expect commercial breaks and a rotating catalog rather than a permanent library. Tubi is not a dependable source for same-day theatrical releases. Available titles and supported devices can differ by country, so confirm both before planning a watch.
2. Pluto TV: best for live channels and casual browsing
Pluto TV combines on-demand movies with live, linear channels. That makes it useful when you would rather browse what is on than choose a specific film from a search result. The trade-off is that channel-based navigation may take longer when you have a particular title in mind, and ads are part of the free experience.
Its film offering leans more toward older and classic programming than the newest releases, according to TechRadar’s comparison. Lineups and regional access can change.
3. The Roku Channel: best for Roku households
The Roku Channel offers free ad-supported movies and television, live channels, and Roku Originals. It is most integrated for people already using Roku, though access beyond Roku hardware is also supported in some markets and through some app or web experiences.

TechRadar’s comparison describes its mix of free on-demand programming and live channels, and notes that it is not limited strictly to Roku hardware. Check the official Roku Channel page for current access in your area.
4. Plex: best for streaming and organizing your own media
Plex combines a free, ad-supported catalog and live channels with tools for organizing and streaming a personal media library. The free catalog is useful on its own, but Plex is especially relevant if you have legally acquired video files you want to manage across devices.
The media-library features make Plex more involved than a basic streaming site, and the free catalog is not the same thing as an ad-free service. Plex Pass is optional; it does not remove ads from the free streaming catalog. See Plex’s streaming service for its current offer. TechRadar also compares its streaming and personal-library roles.
5. Kanopy: best for documentaries and independent film
Kanopy is a strong place to look for documentaries, independent cinema, and classics, especially if you want a more curated film selection rather than a large commercial catalog. Access is commonly provided through participating public libraries or educational institutions; it is not universally available to every viewer.
Kanopy is generally free of conventional commercial ad breaks, but your institution may impose viewing limits. Check eligibility and limits with your library or school before choosing a film. Tom’s Guide’s overview describes Kanopy and Hoopla as library-linked options.
6. Hoopla: best for library borrowing beyond movies
Hoopla lets patrons of participating libraries borrow digital media, which can include movies as well as television, audiobooks, music, and other formats. It is a useful alternative if you already use a library card and want an ad-free borrowing experience rather than a commercial streaming catalog.

Your library determines whether Hoopla is available and may set monthly borrowing limits. A title may also be available only for a limited loan period. Check your library’s rules and the Hoopla service before relying on it for a particular film.
7. YouTube Movies: best for official uploads and flexible title searches
YouTube offers selected free, ad-supported movies as well as rentals and purchases. Its familiar search interface can help when you know a title, and the free catalog is distinct from paid listings. Look for uploads from verified studios, distributors, networks, or other official channels; a search result alone does not establish that an upload is authorized.
Recommended Free Tools
The selection changes, and discovery can mix free and paid choices. Start with the YouTube Movies page, then check the listing carefully before pressing play. Tom’s Guide identifies YouTube’s free movie area as an ad-supported option.
8. Fandango at Home: best when you may rent a title instead
Fandango at Home, formerly Vudu, combines some free ad-supported programming with rentals and purchases. It is useful when a film is free there, or when you are willing to pay once for a title unavailable in free catalogs.
Many sought-after movies require payment, so check whether the listing is free, a rental, or a purchase before starting. This is a U.S.-oriented option with country-specific availability, not a fully free replacement. See Fandango at Home for current listings.
9. Xumo Play: best for another live-TV-style option
Xumo Play offers free, ad-supported programming with live channels and on-demand content. It is a reasonable choice if you like channel surfing or use a supported Xumo device, but its channel lineup and device availability can vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIt is more channel-oriented than a dedicated movie library, so it may be less convenient than Tubi when you want one particular film. The Xumo Play site is the place to check the current lineup and access options.
10. FilmRise: best for older TV and genre programming
FilmRise is a free, ad-supported option with older movies, television, documentaries, and genre programming. Some content is available through its own site or apps, while other titles may appear on partner platforms or channels.
That distribution can make discovery less unified than on a single large service, and it is not a strong bet for new releases. Browse the FilmRise site or its supported app listing for what is available where you live.
11. Fawesome: best for niche browsing
Fawesome is a free, ad-supported service positioned around genre and independent viewing. It may suit viewers willing to browse beyond mainstream hits, but the strength of its catalog depends on genre, territory, and platform.

HDMI ARC simplifies integration with soundbars or AV receivers-—perfect for enjoying live concerts, K-pop performances, or your favorite shows with immersive clarity.
Its selection and app support are less universal than those of the best-known services, so treat it as an additional place to search rather than a guaranteed all-purpose replacement. See Fawesome for its current offering.
12. Internet Archive: best for archival and public-domain films
The Internet Archive’s movie collection can be valuable for classic cinema, historical footage, and other archival material. It has no conventional subscription model, but it is not a commercial streaming catalog and its interface, metadata, video quality, and discovery experience vary from item to item.
Do not assume that every video hosted there is public domain or otherwise cleared for unrestricted viewing. Check the rights information for the specific title; the fact that a file is accessible does not by itself establish its copyright status. Browse the Internet Archive movie collection for archival material, not current releases.

- Broad free movie browsing: Tubi is the first service to try.
- Live channels or background viewing: Compare Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Xumo Play.
- Documentaries, independent films, and classics: Check Kanopy through your library or school; Hoopla is another library option.
- Horror, cult, or other genre titles: Browse Tubi, FilmRise, Fawesome, and Pluto TV, recognizing that catalogs rotate.
- Your own media collection: Plex combines its free catalog with personal-library features.
- A particular newer movie: Check official rental or purchase listings on Fandango at Home or YouTube when no free listing is available.
- Public-domain and archival cinema: Search the Internet Archive and verify the rights information for each item.
These are practical starting points, not permanent genre guarantees: licensing changes which specific films each service carries.
Are free movie-streaming sites legal and safe?
A free service can distribute films legitimately when it has the relevant rights, uses official distribution, or hosts material that is public domain or otherwise lawfully available. “Free” alone does not tell you whether a stream is authorized. Rules differ by country, so this is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice. The distinction between licensed, ad-supported services and unofficial streams of copyrighted works is also outlined in Digital Citizen’s overview.
Be cautious with sites that advertise brand-new theatrical movies for free or rely on fake play buttons, repeated redirects, forced downloads, browser notifications, or suspicious extensions. Do not install a special player, codec pack, extension, or unofficial APK just to watch a film in a current browser. A VPN does not grant streaming rights or make an unauthorized upload legitimate.
What if the movie you want is missing?
- Search the on-demand catalogs at Tubi, Pluto TV, Plex, and The Roku Channel; a title can be on one service but not another.
- If you have a library card or school access, check Kanopy and Hoopla for the title and any borrowing limits.
- Look in YouTube Movies for an official free listing or a clearly labeled rental.
- Check Fandango at Home if you are willing to rent or buy the movie.
- Use the film’s official studio or distributor page to confirm where it is offered, then check the service’s own title page immediately before watching.
- If it is unavailable, check again later: licensing windows can move a movie between services or remove it temporarily.
Search aggregators can help identify where a title is listed, but they do not provide the movie themselves. If a listing appears but will not play, it may be region-restricted, expired, or available only through a paid add-on or institutional login.
Can you watch these services on a TV or download movies?
Many of these services have apps for connected TVs, streaming devices, or phones, but exact support depends on the service, device model, and country. Tubi lists platform information on its welcome page; for the others, check the official service or app store listing for your device.
Do not assume offline downloads are included. Download support may depend on a paid plan, a specific app, or the terms for a borrowed title, and the options can change. Verify the feature on the service’s own help or title page before planning an offline watch.
