Canva is the best all-purpose free starting point for making a personalized greeting, while Adobe Express is a better fit for a talking animated character. Neither is a one-click JibJab clone. For a face-in-a-dancing-video effect, a seasonal service such as ElfYourself is conceptually closer—but check that it is available and what it lets you share before relying on it.
These options fall into three different categories: ready-made character or face videos, collaborative digital cards, and general-purpose editors you use to build a greeting yourself. “Free” usually means a no-cost plan with limits, not a guarantee that every template, asset, or export will cost nothing. JibJab itself offers a limited selection of free ecards and free GIF creation and sharing in its mobile app; many other ecards, Shorties, and videos require membership. Its help center lists web membership at $36 per year or $24 for six months, and mobile membership at $6.99 per month. See JibJab’s membership pricing and free-account rules.
The feature and plan details below reflect vendor pages available in August 2026; prices and limits can change. The listed editors are alternatives for making greetings, not evidence of an automatic face-swap feature.
Which JibJab alternative should you choose?
| Tool | Best for | What you personalize | Free-use caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva | Custom animated greetings and photo videos | Photos, clips, text, music, layouts, and animation | Premium assets and features may require payment; check selections before exporting. |
| Adobe Express | Talking character greetings | A character animated from recorded or uploaded audio | Free features are available, but plan and generative-use limits apply. |
| Kapwing | Browser-based collaborative video editing | Video, GIFs, text, audio, captions, and scenes | Free AI-avatar exports contain a watermark. |
| CapCut | Fast, energetic social clips | Photos, video, effects, templates, captions, and music | Feature and template availability can vary by region, account, and plan. |
| FlexClip | Simple browser-made video cards | Photos, clips, text, music, and templates | Free plan lists 720p downloads and limited stock assets and projects. |
| Animaker | Cartoon scenes and narrated animations | Characters, props, scenes, and narration | Free download, branding, and plan limits should be checked on its pricing page. |
| FiraCard | Group-contributed digital cards | Contributor messages, photos, GIFs, and short videos | Current free limits and privacy details are not established here; verify them directly. |
| ElfYourself | Seasonal face-in-dance videos, if available | Faces in seasonal character videos | Availability and free sharing rules need a live check; not a dependable year-round option. |
JibJab’s defining appeal is a face placed into humorous photos, GIFs, or videos, as described in its app listing. Most tools below do something different: they let you assemble a greeting or animate a character, rather than automatically putting your face into a dance. If that effect is the whole point, check the seasonal option first; if the greeting itself matters more, choose an editor based on how much control you want.

1. Canva: best all-purpose custom greeting maker
Canva is a strong choice for birthdays, retirements, holidays, weddings, anniversaries, and office farewells when you want to combine your own photos or clips with animated text, music, and transitions. Its free plan is listed at US$0 and includes a drag-and-drop editor, design types and templates, stock media, and 5 GB of storage; the exact amount of free content can change. Canva is a design and video editor, not an automatic face-swap service.
Make a greeting in Canva
- Open the Canva movie maker and start with a blank video or a greeting template.
- Upload your photos and clips, then arrange them in the timeline.
- Add animated text, captions, stickers, transitions, and music as needed.
- Preview the timing, trim clips, and check every element for a paid-content label before downloading or sharing.
Canva’s pricing page lists its free-plan details. A template can be free to open but include premium media or features that trigger a payment prompt, so check assets before spending time on the edit.
Choose it when: you want a polished personal design and are happy to assemble it yourself. It is less suitable when you want a funny face-in-dance result with almost no editing.
2. Adobe Express: best for a talking animated character
Adobe Express offers a simple route to a character-led greeting: choose a character, give it audio, and generate an animation. That makes it useful for a spoken birthday message, congratulations, or a playful announcement. It is character animation, not a face inserted into a JibJab-style video.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Animate a character
- Open Adobe Express Animate Characters.
- Select a character and upload or record a voice track.
- Choose a canvas size, preview the animation, then download or continue editing in Express.
Adobe’s pricing page lists a free plan with video and animation tools, including video length up to 30 minutes. That is a product limit, not a recommendation to make a greeting that long; check the current plan and any limits on the specific character or generative feature you select.

Choose it when: the message should speak, and a cartoon character is more appropriate than a photo montage.
3. Kapwing: best for collaborative browser editing
Kapwing suits a team or family assembling a multi-scene video, meme-style card, or GIF in a browser. Its editing workflow supports video and image formats, audio, captions, and text overlays. It offers more timeline control than a ready-made card service, but requires more assembly.
The important free-tier caveat is explicit: Kapwing says free-account exports of AI-avatar videos contain a watermark. Do not assume an avatar workflow will produce a clean, watermark-free greeting. Check the current Kapwing plan details and export rules for your chosen project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose it when: several people are helping make a greeting, or you need more control over scenes, captions, and timing than a template provides.
4. CapCut: best for humorous short-form clips
CapCut is a better fit for a lively, music-driven birthday clip or social greeting than for a traditional ecard. Its online tools promote templates, stickers, music, text, trimming, auto-captions, and background removal. Its movie maker also describes effects, multitrack editing, chroma key, and slow motion.

5. FlexClip: best for a straightforward browser video card
FlexClip’s free plan is useful for a simple photo montage, invitation, holiday greeting, or family video card. The vendor’s pricing page lists the free plan at US$0, with downloads up to 720p, one stock video and one stock audio item per project, up to 12 online projects, and videos up to 10 minutes. These are plan details shown on the FlexClip pricing page and may change.
Those limits are enough for many ordinary greetings, but the stock-asset allowance is small and the service is not a face-animation tool. Before exporting, check whether the particular template or media you selected is premium and whether any branding applies.
Choose it when: you want to build a conventional video greeting in a browser without learning a more complex editor.

6. Animaker: best for a cartoon scene or narrated story
Animaker is for people who want to stage a small cartoon rather than edit a slideshow: characters, props, scenes, and narration can make a birthday greeting or office announcement feel like a short animated story. It is not a one-click face-in-video service, and it takes more setup than choosing a card template.
Animaker has a free tier alongside paid plans, but exact free download, branding, and usage limits are not established here. Check the current Animaker pricing page before building a project you need to export without a watermark.
Choose it when: a cartoon setting and narrated characters matter more than speed or photographic personalization.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. FiraCard: best for a card with contributions from a group
FiraCard is described as a shared card where contributors can add messages, photos, GIFs, and short video clips. That makes it a closer functional match for a group birthday, retirement, wedding, classroom, or team greeting than a video editor—but not a replacement for JibJab’s face-in-dancing-video effect.
The available feature description is on FiraCard’s comparison page. Current free-plan limits, account requirements, storage duration, download rules, and privacy practices are not established here; verify them on FiraCard’s official site before sharing personal photos or relying on it for a deadline.

8. ElfYourself: closest seasonal face-video idea, if available
ElfYourself has been described as a service for putting faces into seasonal dancing videos, which is conceptually close to JibJab’s novelty clips. That makes it a possible holiday pick, not a dependable year-round recommendation. The available reference is third-party coverage, and current free templates, download options, and sharing rules are not confirmed here.
Check ElfYourself’s official site before planning around it. If it is live, confirm whether the specific video can be created and shared without payment; do not assume all content is free based on the existence of a free starting point.
Choose it when: the service is available and you want a seasonal face-in-character joke more than a custom-built greeting.

How to avoid a “free” project that costs money at export
A no-cost signup does not mean every finished file is free to download. Before editing, check the exact workflow from template selection through export. Common payment triggers include:
- Premium templates, stock photos or video, music, and other assets.
- Watermark removal or higher-resolution export.
- AI features with usage limits or paid credits.
- Limits on project count, video length, or storage.
- Separate rules for web, iOS, or Android apps.
Look for labels such as Pro, Premium, or a crown icon as you add content. Make a short test export early if the service allows it, especially when a watermark-free result matters. Kapwing explicitly identifies a watermark on free AI-avatar exports; for other tools, verify the exact asset and export you intend to use rather than assuming a universal no-watermark policy.
Choose by occasion and effort
- Birthday or retirement montage: Canva for design flexibility, or FlexClip for a simpler browser workflow.
- Talking character message: Adobe Express Animate Characters.
- Team or family contribution card: FiraCard if its current terms suit your group; Canva or Kapwing if you prefer to assemble a video.
- Cartoon story: Animaker.
- Social-media joke: CapCut.
- Holiday face-dance effect: Check ElfYourself’s live availability and free sharing terms first.
Photos, privacy, and commercial use
Face and photo uploads deserve more care than ordinary text editing. Before uploading someone else’s image, get their permission; for children’s photos, review the service’s parental-consent and data-retention terms. Check whether uploads can be deleted, who can access a shared project, and whether a public link exposes the finished card. No privacy protection should be assumed unless the service’s own policy describes it.
A personal greeting also differs from a public brand post, internal company video, or paid client project. Templates, stock music, graphics, AI outputs, and likenesses can have separate licensing rules. Check the applicable terms for the service and assets before using a greeting commercially; a free editor plan alone does not establish commercial rights.
