Yes—in the announced plan, ITV’s main channels and the core ITVX service will remain free to access without a Sky subscription. But Sky has agreed to buy only ITV’s Media & Entertainment business, not ITV Studios, and the deal has not completed. As of August 18, 2026, it remains subject to regulatory review.

What has Sky agreed to buy?

Sky, which is part of Comcast, has agreed to acquire ITV’s Media & Entertainment business. That covers ITV’s television channels, ITVX and related media operations; it is not a sale of the entire ITV group. ITV Studios, the production business behind many programmes, is excluded. A supply arrangement is intended to keep ITV Studios programmes on ITV, though individual programme rights and availability remain subject to their agreements.

The announced consideration is up to £1.6 billion: £1.2 billion in cash, Love Productions transferring to ITV at an agreed value of about £200 million, and up to £200 million in performance-related payments. The final amount is subject to customary adjustments. Those figures describe the transaction, not a change viewers need to make.

Will ITV still be free—and will you need Sky?

The companies say ITV’s channels and ITVX will remain free-to-air, with the channels continuing on platforms including Freeview, Freely, Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat. In practical terms, ordinary access to ITV’s free-to-air channels is not supposed to require a Sky subscription if the acquisition is approved and completed. Comcast’s announcement names the platforms, while Sky and ITV’s deal site describes ITV as remaining free to watch.

Viewer question Announced position
Will ITV’s linear channels stay free-to-air? Yes, under the announced plan.
Will I need Sky for ordinary ITV viewing? No, not for the free-to-air access the companies say will continue.
Will ITVX still have a free option? Yes. The core service is intended to remain free to access and advertising-funded.
Is ITVX Premium the same as basic ITVX? No. Premium is a separate paid tier.
Has the acquisition completed? No. Regulatory review and completion conditions remain.

“Free” needs a little qualification. Watching live television in the UK may require a TV licence under the applicable rules; ITVX streaming also requires an internet connection and compatible device. Freeview reception depends on local signal and equipment, while Freely is internet-delivered and therefore depends on broadband. ITVX’s free viewing is advertising-supported, and a paid premium option can coexist with that basic service.

What about Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Love Island?

Viewers are not expected to need a Sky subscription for the normal ITV broadcast or ITVX version of these programmes if the transaction is approved and the announced commitments are implemented. ITV’s viewer explainer addresses programmes such as Love Island and Coronation Street directly: ITV’s explanation of what the deal means for viewers.

That is not a promise that every episode, box set or archive programme will be available on demand forever. Linear channel access, catch-up windows, archive rights and premium or early-access offerings are different things. Programme availability can change as rights and distribution arrangements change.

What happens on each platform?

How you watch now What the announced plan means Practical qualification
Freeview ITV’s linear channels are intended to remain available. Reception varies by location and equipment. ITVX on-demand viewing requires internet access.
Freely ITV is included in the free-to-air offering the parties say will continue. Freely is internet-delivered, so broadband and a compatible device are needed.
Freesat ITV’s channels are among the named services intended to remain available. Satellite equipment and signal are required; channel and app features need not remain identical.
Virgin Media The parties name Virgin Media among the platforms where ITV services will remain available. The commitment does not promise an unchanged interface, channel number or feature set.
Sky platforms ITV channels and ITVX are expected to remain accessible within Sky’s ecosystem. A Sky subscription may provide a convenient interface or other paid services, but is not meant to be the prerequisite for free ITV.
ITVX app or website The core ITVX service is intended to remain free to access. Broadband, a compatible device and advertising apply; Premium is a separate paid option.

Sky and ITV had already extended a platform partnership covering ITVX and ITV’s free-to-air channels on Sky Glass, Sky Stream and Sky Q. The partnership announcement is useful context, but it does not mean every future app feature or arrangement is fixed.

The transaction is focused on the UK media and entertainment operation. Viewers outside the UK should not assume the UK free-to-air commitments settle availability in Ireland or elsewhere, where rights and distribution agreements can differ.

What is promised, and what is not settled?

Announced or subject to existing obligations Not established as a permanent guarantee
The parties say ITV’s channels will remain free-to-air and ITVX’s core service will remain free to access. That every programme will remain on the same channel or be available on demand indefinitely.
The transaction announcement says ITV’s public-service broadcasting commitments will continue in full under the relevant framework. That every detail of ITV’s present offer is protected forever, regardless of future licences, rights or law.
Sky and Comcast say ITV News and Sky News will remain distinct editorial voices, subject to existing Ofcom requirements. That common ownership will have no effect on editorial governance, prominence or media plurality.
Sky and ITV describe the combination as an opportunity to bring more sport to free-to-air television. That a particular tournament or event has already been secured for ITV.
The companies have set out a continuing free-to-air intention. Future ITVX design, sign-in, recommendations, advertising, integration with Sky services or the future of the separate Premium tier.

Free-to-air describes access to a channel without a pay-TV subscription; it does not mean advert-free, guarantee an unchanged app, or make all programme rights permanent. Sky has not announced that ITVX and NOW will merge, that Premium will disappear, or that a Sky subscription will become compulsory for basic ITV viewing. Such outcomes should not be treated as plans without a specific announcement.

Why is Sky buying the media business?

The companies present the deal as a way to combine free-to-air broadcasting, advertising-funded streaming and subscription television, while strengthening investment and competing with global streaming services. Sky and ITV have also said the combined business would represent around 20% of in-home UK viewing; that is their stated estimate, not a guarantee of a particular change to programming or viewing choices. Sky’s announcement sets out its strategic case.

For viewers, commercial integration could mean changes to how ITVX is promoted, how advertising is sold or how services are presented on connected televisions. Those are possibilities, not confirmed product changes. The announced ambition for more free sport is likewise not a list of new rights: no specific event should be assumed to move to ITV unless its rights are separately announced.

Why is the deal under scrutiny?

The acquisition could bring Sky News and ITV News under common ownership, alongside a large portfolio of television, streaming and advertising assets. Comcast says the news services will remain distinct editorial voices and continue to be subject to Ofcom requirements. That is a stated commitment; questions of media plurality, competition and the influence of a combined broadcaster and platform remain matters for scrutiny rather than settled conclusions.

As of August 18, 2026, the Competition and Markets Authority’s case was open. The CMA’s public page says its invitation to comment ran from July 23 to August 6 and that the formal phase-one investigation had not yet begun as of the page’s published status. The deal also remains subject to applicable regulatory and corporate conditions. Check the CMA case page for the latest status; approval should not be assumed.

A separate government discussion about possible managed transitions from terrestrial television toward internet-delivered TV is a wider infrastructure question, not an announcement that Sky will remove ITV from Freeview. The 2026 media proposals considered possible transition timelines of 2034 or 2044. The government’s announcement also discussed on-demand rights for major listed sporting events; it does not establish that any particular event will be shown by ITV.

What should ITV viewers do now?

  • Keep watching through your current route. There is no immediate change while the transaction is pending.
  • Do not buy Sky solely because you are worried about losing ITV; the announced plan is for ordinary ITV access to remain free-to-air.
  • If you use ITVX, continue using the free core service if it suits you; broadband and a compatible device are still needed.
  • For a channel or app change, check the relevant broadcaster or platform’s current guidance rather than assuming the transaction has caused it.
  • Treat claims about a future paywall, channel closure or merger of streaming apps as unconfirmed unless the companies or regulators announce a specific change.

For viewers outside the UK, or anyone asking about detailed TV-licensing obligations, the free-to-air deal is not a substitute for checking the rules and rights that apply to their location and viewing method.
