The Associated Press’s September 2024 streaming guide adds that a mysterious character arrives at the family’s home amid fears of a murderous drifter. In the AP’s description, one daughter becomes absorbed in a storybook fable about the Grey Man, a dust-like figure said to enter homes and turn victims into villains when breathed in. These details provide a glimpse of the film’s story without reducing its threat to a conventional creature feature.
How does the film approach its horror?
Hulu classifies Hold Your Breath as drama, horror, and thriller. In an interview published October 2, 2024, Paulson said the psychological aspect interested her more than playing a conventional monster. She also described the air itself as the monster, connecting that idea to the over-harvesting of land: “The monster as it were, is the air itself and of course, created by our own over-harvesting of the land.” That is Paulson’s interpretation of the film, not a stand-alone historical explanation of the Dust Bowl.
