As Reel Mockery’s recap describes the opening, Karadec pursues Derek Price while Morgan and Lieutenant Selena Soto are at the station with the Game Maker, whom the recap identifies as David Peck, also known as Matthew Clarke, played by David Giuntoli. The episode brings that confrontation to an immediate endpoint; the search for Roman, by contrast, continues beyond this hour, according to Ready Steady Cut’s recap.
Does Morgan’s victory feel earned?
The episode’s central payoff works best when it treats Morgan’s advantage as a matter of observation and judgment rather than simply declaring her the smarter player. The Game Maker’s appeal comes from the sense that he is testing her, not just supplying another case to solve. Morgan’s win matters because she can read the situation and make a decisive move within that contest.

#1 Best Overall
But a victory can resolve the immediate danger without fully satisfying the setup. The more enigmatic the Game Maker seemed, the more the episode needed to show why Morgan’s approach could beat him—and to make that result feel like the consequence of what viewers have watched, not an escape hatch from a difficult opponent. The resolution gives the confrontation a stopping point, though it also risks making the antagonist seem less formidable than his introduction suggested.
Why the Game Maker should return
A short arc can be a sensible choice for a crime procedural. It lets the series close a major confrontation and return attention to new investigations instead of making every episode orbit one villain. Yet the Game Maker offers something a routine suspect does not: a personal, recurring foil who can challenge Morgan’s instincts and keep the show’s broader mystery moving.
Rank #2
CinemaBlend’s commentary argues that the character is an entertaining, enigmatic adversary worth keeping in play. That is a critical judgment, not confirmation of a future return. Still, the case for bringing him back is clear: the series has established the ingredients for a longer contest, but this episode ends the immediate round before viewers have seen much of the rivalry develop. A later appearance could build on Morgan’s win without undoing it.
How the other storylines shape the episode
The Roman search gives “Checkmate” a thread that extends beyond the Game Maker confrontation, while Elliot’s talent-show preparation and the team’s unresolved cases broaden the hour’s focus. These strands help the episode retain the show’s procedural and family dimensions. They also compete with the central showdown for space, so the Game Maker material has less room to develop the back-and-forth that would make a short arc feel complete.

That balance helps explain the mixed critical response. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing includes a critic who found the hour intense and satisfying, while Tell-Tale TV’s review says the momentum falls after the premiere and the episode does not match the setup. Those are differing critical reactions, not evidence of audience consensus. The split reflects the episode’s own trade-off: it delivers a resolution, but its surrounding threads and brisk pacing leave less room for the adversarial dynamic to breathe.
Verdict: a satisfying win, a premature goodbye
“Checkmate” gives Morgan a meaningful immediate victory and keeps the Roman mystery open, but its clean endpoint for the Game Maker feels more final than the character’s potential warrants. The episode can stand as a completed confrontation; the series would be stronger if it treated that outcome as one round in a longer game rather than the last move.
