That is a significant update after years of uncertainty—but it is not a release date, a production start or confirmation that the movie will play in theaters. Variety reported the development news on May 7, 2026.
Is Hocus Pocus 3 happening?
According to Variety’s May 7, 2026 report, Disney’s third Hocus Pocus film is in early development. The report says the project was first reported as in development in 2023, but a development announcement is not the same as a film entering production. The latest report does not give a production schedule.
The timeline helps explain why the new report is progress rather than a near-term promise:
- July 2025: Sarah Jessica Parker said there had been no further developments beyond the group wanting to make the movie. Variety reported her update in its July 15, 2025 story.
- October 2025: Bette Midler said a script had been sent and described the team as still working out what the project would be, where it would go and how much it would cost. GamesRadar reported her comments from an appearance on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen in its October 20, 2025 story. A script circulating does not establish that a final draft has been approved.
- May 7, 2026: Variety reported early development at Disney and the return of the original trio, while describing a theatrical release as under consideration.
The available updates support saying that the film is in early development. They do not establish that it has been canceled, is filming or has a confirmed release plan.

Are the Sanderson sisters returning?
Variety reports that Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy will return as Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson. The report does not confirm other returning cast members, so details about the wider ensemble remain unknown.
When will Hocus Pocus 3 come out?
No release date, filming date or production schedule is given in the May 2026 report. Without a production timetable, assigning the movie a speculative release year would go beyond what has been reported.

Will it be in theaters or on Disney+?
A theatrical release is being considered, Variety reports, but that is not a finalized distribution decision. Hocus Pocus 2 debuted as a Disney+ exclusive on September 30, 2022, according to Disney. That release is useful context, not proof that the third film will follow the same route. Disney said on October 19, 2022, that the sequel had become the service’s “biggest movie debut in the U.S. to date”; that is Disney’s own dated performance claim, not an independently audited industry comparison.

The May 2026 Variety report establishes early development, the returning central trio and consideration of a theatrical release. It does not establish a release date, a start of filming, an approved final script, a director, a budget, additional returning cast or a final distribution platform. Those points should be treated as unannounced in the available reporting, not filled in with guesses.
