Justin Tipping’s film makes that bargain vivid with unnerving images and a committed lead performance, but its critique of football worship and ambition is less persuasive when it spells out its meaning. Jordan Peele produced the film; Tipping directed it.
What is HIM about?
After a fan’s attack threatens the football future of quarterback Cameron Cade, he gets the chance to rehabilitate and train at the secluded compound of Isaiah White, the celebrated player he idolizes. The closer Cade gets to White, the more the offer feels like a trap: the question hanging over the training is what he is willing to sacrifice for excellence.
That setup gives the film a natural Faustian framework. The Associated Press reported that Julia Fox, who plays White’s wife, understands selling one’s soul as a metaphor for compromising morals and values for a paycheck. Director Justin Tipping described the athletes’ drive in terms of trying to stop time. Those ideas make football more than a sport in HIM: it becomes a faith built around bodies, fame and the fantasy of escaping human limits.
The Associated Press’s report on the film’s Faustian bargain also quotes film studies professor Kirsten Thompson on the recurring appeal of stories about eternal life, youth, power and status.

Does the football-horror premise work?
The premise is the film’s strongest asset. Football already lends itself to horror imagery: impact, ritual, crowd fervor and the conversion of physical risk into spectacle. HIM leans into that unease, treating the sport as a meat grinder and the pursuit of a place among its elite as a bargain with an institution that prizes performance over the person.
Andrew Lawrence’s review for The Guardian highlights the film’s X-ray treatment of collisions as a striking way to make the violence visible. But he argues that the football critique loses credibility and subtlety as the story goes on, and that the film risks feeding the same appetite for carnage it means to condemn. That tension is central to the experience: the movie’s most memorable imagery is also entangled with the spectacle it questions.

The film’s head-injury plot belongs to its fictional horror story, not to an evidence-based account of football medicine. Its value here is dramatic: Cade’s vulnerability makes the promise of recovery and elite training feel both seductive and ominous.
Style, performance and storytelling
HIM is more assured as a succession of disturbing images than as a sustained argument. TIME critic Stephanie Zacharek credits Tipping’s stylistic choices and Tyriq Withers’s performance as Cade, while finding that the film’s ideas become increasingly obvious and over-explained. The Guardian similarly responds to the visual invention but objects to the story’s diminishing credibility.

Withers gives the aspiring quarterback a human center as the film pushes him into an increasingly disorienting world. Yet the broader characterization and logic do not always give that performance enough support. When the film relies on blunt declarations rather than letting its imagery and characters carry the theme, the Faustian premise feels less like a discovery than a point being underlined.
These are specific critical responses, not a claim of universal agreement. Together, they point to the same divide: the film has a distinctive visual language and a compelling central idea, but its execution does not consistently turn either into a nuanced story.

Verdict: a striking idea, an uneven fumble
HIM is worth considering for viewers drawn to football horror, stylized violence and stories about the price of ambition. Its premise gives the sport an eerie mythic dimension, and its visual choices can make that dimension hard to forget. But the critique is less incisive than the concept promises: the film’s insistence on its themes and its dependence on violent spectacle undercut the subtlety it needs.
Universal lists the film as rated R for strong bloody violence, language throughout, sexual material, nudity and some drug use. Its home-video information lists 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital and Blu-ray + Digital collector’s editions, as well as DVD. The October 6, 2025 press release said digital purchase or rental was then available and that physical editions were scheduled for November 11, 2025; the current formats and edition-specific bonus features should be checked on the live listing. Universal’s title page gives a runtime of 1 hour 37 minutes, while its press release says 1 hour 36 minutes, so the exact runtime is not consistent across those official materials. Universal’s HIM title page and October 6, 2025 home-entertainment announcement provide the release details.
