Senna is the better starting point for most viewers: it follows Ayrton Senna’s Formula 1 career from 1984 to 1994, including his rivalry with Alain Prost and the events surrounding his death. Watch Hill next for a different perspective on the same era: Damon Hill’s family story, his own career, and his 1996 championship. If Damon Hill or the personal cost of a sporting career is your main interest, start with Hill instead.
What is the difference between Hill and Senna?
These documentaries share part of Formula 1’s history, but they have different subjects and centers of gravity. Senna is a portrait of Ayrton Senna and his years in Formula 1; Hill is a portrait of Damon Hill that places his racing career alongside his family history and private life. The films overlap around 1994, but they do not tell the same biography twice.
| Film | Main focus | Time period and key events | Listed runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senna (2010), directed by Asif Kapadia | Ayrton Senna’s character, pursuit of perfection, rivalries, and Formula 1 career | Formula 1 career from his 1984 debut to his death in 1994; includes his rivalry with Alain Prost and relationships with rivals, team bosses, and the sport’s governing body. Formula 1’s guide describes this scope. | 105 minutes, according to the American Film Institute’s film record |
| Hill, directed by Alex Holmes | Damon Hill’s family legacy, private life, and route to becoming a Formula 1 champion | Includes the death of his father Graham, teammate Ayrton Senna’s death, Hill’s 1994 title-deciding collision with Michael Schumacher, and his 1996 championship-winning Japanese Grand Prix. See Sky’s synopsis. | 90 minutes, according to Sky’s announcement |
The runtimes are close enough that length need not decide the order: the listed difference is 15 minutes. They come from different sources, and the runtime for the edition available to you may vary, so check its listing. AFI records the US release of Senna as August 12, 2011, while the film is commonly identified as a 2010 production; that difference reflects distinct production and release dates, not two separate documentaries.
Why watch Senna first?
Senna supplies the broader historical frame for the shared events. Formula 1 describes it as tracing Senna’s career from his 1984 debut through his death in 1994, while also exploring his character and the relationships and tensions around him. Starting here means you meet the driver and the context before turning to Hill, which revisits 1994 through the life of one of Senna’s teammates.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That order is especially useful if you are new to Formula 1 or want to understand why the events of 1994 matter to both films. It gives the Senna–Prost rivalry and Senna’s place in the sport their own space first. Then Hill can shift attention to Damon’s family background and career, including the aftermath of Senna’s death and Hill’s own defining moments.
This is a recommendation based on the films’ documented subject matter, not a claim that Senna is objectively better. There is no comparative audience study or head-to-head quality measure establishing a winner.

When should you start with Hill?
Start with Hill if Damon Hill is the reason you are choosing between the films, or if you are more drawn to a family-centered sports story than a career-spanning portrait of a single driver. Sky describes the 90-minute film as an intimate account featuring Damon Hill and his family, following his move from motorcycle racing to Formula 1 and his championship, as well as his family legacy and private life. Its focus is not limited to race results.
The film’s story includes the death of Damon’s father, Graham Hill, Senna’s death in 1994, Damon’s collision with Michael Schumacher in a title-deciding race that year, and his 1996 championship-winning Japanese Grand Prix. If you watch it first, Senna can then broaden the part of that story centered on Ayrton Senna and his place in Formula 1.

Damon Hill described the film as “a highly personal telling of my life and Formula One career” in Sky’s release announcement. That statement helps convey the intended perspective: Hill is a personal portrait, not simply a companion account of Senna’s career.
Are the documentaries connected?
They are connected by Formula 1 history and by the 1994 events described in both films, but they have separate subjects. Senna centers on Ayrton Senna’s life and racing career; Hill centers on Damon Hill’s life, family, and route to the title. The overlap is most useful as a change of perspective: one film frames Senna’s career and death, while the other puts those events within Damon Hill’s story as a teammate and rival in the same period.

So, watching one is not a prerequisite for understanding the other. The chronological order is a way to add context, not a required viewing sequence or a continuous two-part documentary.

For a newcomer who wants a wider introduction to Formula 1 in the 1980s and early 1990s, start with Senna. Its career span, rivalry with Prost, and attention to the people and institutions around the driver provide more of the historical frame described in the available synopsis. Follow it with Hill if you want to see how the same period intersects with Damon Hill’s family history and championship path.

If a personal biography is a more inviting entry point than a decade of racing history, start with Hill. Its family focus may be the more relevant draw even for someone who is not yet a dedicated Formula 1 fan. Damon Hill’s endorsement says he hoped it would appeal both to “a total Formula One nut” and to someone looking for an uplifting film; that is his view of the film’s appeal, not an independent audience finding.
Where can you watch them?
Availability depends on country, date, and edition. Sky announced Hill for Sky and NOW from July 2, 2025, but that announcement does not establish current access in every territory or on every service. A UK HMV product page lists a DVD edition with an October 20, 2025 release date. For Senna, a Duke Video listing offers a two-disc DVD. These listings do not guarantee current stock, price, or compatibility with every player.
Formula 1’s guide said Senna could be rented on major platforms worldwide when that guide was published in January 2021. That historical statement is not confirmation of current streaming availability. Check local service listings before choosing a platform, and check the edition’s runtime and format if those matter to your plans.
Quick Recap
A simple viewing order
- Choose the story you most want first. Pick Senna for Ayrton Senna, his rivalry with Alain Prost, and the 1984–1994 career frame. Pick Hill for Damon Hill’s family story and path to the 1996 championship.
- If you want the shared 1994 context, watch Senna first. It gives the Senna-centered account before Hill revisits overlapping events from Damon Hill’s perspective.
- Watch the other film for the change in viewpoint. The value of seeing both is their different focus, not a promise that one is a sequel to the other.
