Spoilers for “Pawns,” the Season 2 premiere of High Potential. The Game Maker is back, and “Pawns” makes his threat feel closer by placing Morgan Gillory’s family under police protection while she investigates a missing woman she suspects is part of his game. The episode’s strongest tension is between that personal danger and the show’s familiar case-of-the-week appeal: the cliffhangers raise the stakes, but Maya’s disappearance remains unresolved when the hour ends.

What happens in the High Potential Season 2 premiere?

ABC identifies the Season 2 opener as “Pawns,” which aired September 16, 2025. Its official synopsis says a new crime pulls Morgan back into the Game Maker’s game as she tries to shield her family from his threats (ABC Press).

The story picks up after Season 1’s cliffhanger, with Morgan’s family under police protection and a woman named Maya missing. Morgan sees a possible connection to the Game Maker; her colleagues are not yet convinced. The investigation brings Maya’s ex-husband, Derek, and her employer, Jason, into focus. Footage of Maya arguing with Derek appears to point one way, but later evidence complicates the apparent explanation (Parade’s recap).

That setup gives Morgan two problems at once: work out what happened to Maya and persuade the team that the case may be serving someone else’s design. The episode makes her instinct consequential, but it does not make that instinct proof.

Does the Game Maker appear in “Pawns”?

He does, in a consequential way: at the close, the Game Maker turns himself in. The surrender shifts the question from whether he is still a threat to what he wants and what his apparent cooperation might conceal. TV Insider’s September 16, 2025 interview with Judy Reyes discusses the surrender and interview context (TV Insider).

Reyes, who plays Selena Soto, explained why the team can be skeptical of Morgan without dismissing the questions she raises: “She doesn’t believe her, but sometimes the way she ends up in these conclusions, it leads to questions which is a police officer’s job, it’s a cop’s job to ask all those questions” (TV Insider).

Was Maya found by the end of the premiere?

No. Maya’s disappearance is still unresolved when the episode closes. That distinction matters: “Pawns” sets the missing-woman case alongside the Game Maker’s surrender rather than wrapping the case up before its final hook (Parade).

How well does the premiere balance suspense and the procedural?

The personal stakes sharpen Morgan’s choices

With her family under protection, Morgan’s concern is not an abstract season-long menace. It shapes the conditions in which she works and what she stands to lose. Kaitlin Olson remains the episode’s anchor: her comic and poignant reactions help make Morgan’s anxious family life and unconventional deductions feel like parts of the same character, rather than competing modes. Her rapport with Daniel Sunjata, Judy Reyes and Amirah J. gives the investigation a lively ensemble center.

The serial plot risks crowding the weekly mystery

The episode’s central trade-off is also its open question for the season. A Game Maker story threaded through a missing-person investigation can give an ordinary case urgency; it can also pull attention away from the satisfying logic and resolution of a self-contained mystery. Pajiba welcomed the show’s appeal while warning that the continuing story could disrupt its flow, and the episode’s several cliffhangers make that concern understandable (Pajiba). “Pawns” establishes the tension, but one premiere cannot determine whether the season will keep both engines running.

What are the premiere’s cliffhangers?

There are two major hooks. The Game Maker turns himself in, while Daphne and Oz locate Roman in a Nevada hotel room. Meanwhile, Maya has not been found. Those unresolved threads make the episode a launch into the next installment, not a closed mystery with a neat final answer (Parade; TV Insider).

How critics viewed Season 2

Metacritic listed a 75 Metascore based on six critic reviews on October 8, 2026. That is an aggregate for Season 2, not a score for “Pawns,” and the total may change as reviews are added (Metacritic). It provides context for the season’s reception, but it cannot settle whether this particular premiere’s cliffhangers strengthen or strain its procedural format.
