The episode also brings Lucia back into Karadec’s life. She is not a new acquaintance: she is his ex-fiancée, recently returned to Los Angeles and single. Their renewed connection culminates in a date, with Morgan helping send them on their way.
How does the murder investigation get solved?
Declan’s gaming rivalry points the team toward a threat
The investigation follows a missing laptop, game accounts, a delivery and Declan’s conflict with a rival player known as Drednog. The clues eventually point away from a conventional weapon and toward poison.

A translation clue reveals the toxin
Morgan recognizes that a translated game-chat reference to “teppo” has been misunderstood as a gun reference. In the episode’s investigation, the word instead points to puffer-fish toxin. That connection leads Morgan to consider the specialized knowledge of trained sushi chefs.
Ryo Yasuda is identified as the killer
The trail brings the team to the Yasuda family. Ryo Yasuda, the gamer twin, is identified as Declan’s killer: he poisoned a burrito that was delivered to the victim. The case’s gaming rivalry supplied the trail, while the toxin explains how the murder was carried out.

Who is Lucia, and what happens between her and Karadec?
Lucia is Karadec’s former fiancée. They meet for coffee after she returns to Los Angeles, and the conversation leads Karadec to leave the precinct with her for a date. In a TVLine interview, Susan Kelechi Watson, who plays Lucia, said they had split five years earlier. The episode suggests Karadec worries he has not changed enough since then; Lucia, as Watson described it, can see that his work-life balance may now be different with Morgan on the team.
Morgan encourages Karadec to give Lucia a chance and watches as the two depart. Her support reads as sincere matchmaking, but the final look can carry some emotional ambiguity.

Does the episode confirm a Morgan-Karadec love triangle?
No. “NPC” sets up a possible romantic complication without confirming one. Karadec goes on a date with Lucia, while Morgan’s reaction is left open to interpretation; the episode does not establish that Morgan and Karadec are a couple or confirm Morgan’s romantic feelings.
Watson offered her own reading of the dynamic in TVLine: “I feel like [Morgan and Karadec] have a vibe going that feels like, yeah they’re friends, but could it be more?” That is the actor’s interpretation, not a definitive statement about the characters’ relationship. The triangle is a possibility the episode invites viewers to wonder about, rather than a resolved storyline.

Episode details and where to watch
ABC lists “NPC” as Season 2, Episode 11, with a runtime of 42:52, a TV-14 rating and a January 28, 2026 date on its series page. Rotten Tomatoes labels it January 27, 2026. Those are different source-listed dates; neither should be silently substituted for the other. ABC’s page directs viewers to Hulu for full episodes, but catalog access can vary by territory and change over time.
