Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMost old DVDs are worth only a few dollars, but a small number of complete TV box sets, discontinued editions, and collector releases can merit a closer look. Age alone does not make a disc valuable: the exact edition, buyer demand, condition, and completeness matter more than how long it has sat on a shelf.
Are DVDs worth anything?
Sometimes—but a high asking price is not proof of value, and most titles are not hidden windfalls. In a publisher-reported sample of 527,092 US eBay DVD and Blu-ray sold listings from the prior 90 days, current as of July 2, 2026, the median sale price was $7.52. In that same sample, 30.9% sold for at least $10 and 8.5% for at least $20. These are sampled listings, not a census of every DVD transaction or a promise about any individual copy. Flippr’s July 2026 overview provides the dataset context.
A separate publisher-reported analysis of 583,559 US eBay sold DVD and Blu-ray listings from May 1 through August 3, 2026, reported an average sold price of $10.18; almost 70% sold below $10, and 4.9% sold above $25. The analysis excluded prices above $1,500. Those figures describe that sample and period, not the whole market. Flippr’s August 2026 analysis also compared 4,505 regular titles, averaging $8.34, with 130 complete-series box sets, averaging $31.20. In its defined sample, 1.4% of regular titles versus 58% of complete-series sets averaged at least $25. That gap makes complete sets worth checking, not automatically valuable.
Which DVDs are worth investigating?
Think of these as search leads, not guaranteed winners. Scarcity and active demand have to meet for a DVD to sell above ordinary prices.

- Baseball s epicenter sits at 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx, New York. Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: SPORTS/GAMES Rating: NR Age: 826663108170 UPC: 826663108170 Manufacturer No: SF10817
- Complete television series: Box sets can attract buyers looking for a full run in one purchase. In Flippr’s May 1–August 3, 2026 US eBay sample, Gunsmoke: The Complete Series had a $101.25 median across 48 sales; Law & Order Complete Series Seasons 1–20, $95.24 across 64; Murder, She Wrote Complete Series, $49.99 across 82; and Buffy the Vampire Slayer Complete Series, $45.83 across 112. These are dated medians for those editions, not guaranteed values for a set on your shelf.
- Discontinued or out-of-print editions: A release that is no longer readily available may draw collectors, especially when no equivalent edition has replaced it. Flippr described The Gods Must Be Crazy I / II Double Feature DVD as out of print; its reported median was $149.85 across 25 sales in the May 1–August 3, 2026 sample, with the lower quartile above $111. Treat that as a specific, time-bound example—not a valuation for every copy or edition.
- Boutique and collector releases: Special packaging, limited editions, and releases from labels sought by collectors can be worth researching. The exact release and included contents still matter.
- Anime, horror, and cult films: These genres have active physical-media collectors, but genre alone does not establish scarcity or price. Check the exact edition and its completed sales.
- Distinctive packaging and unusual editions: Slipcovers, booklets, art cards, and original outer boxes can matter when they belong to the release. A standard edition of a popular film is not interchangeable with a sought-after collector edition.
Why the exact edition matters
The same film may have multiple DVD releases, reissues, regions, or packaging variants—and buyers may pay very different amounts for them. Before comparing prices, record the title and format, edition or release name, region code, label, and packaging details. For box sets, identify the season range and whether every disc is present.
Flippr’s August 2026 analysis illustrates the problem with The Princess Bride: its Princess Bride 20th Anniversary Edition DVD had a reported $86.27 median across 23 sales, but listings that mixed in a different edition could distort comparisons. The same sample reported these other dated DVD medians: Initial D Collector’s Edition, $58.97 across 52 sales; Star Wars Trilogy Widescreen Theatrical Edition, $39.99 across 48; Walt Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies, $39.99 across 26; and Toys (1992 Robin Williams), $34.95 across 74. Each figure is for the identified DVD edition in that sample, not every release with the same title. The analysis required at least 20 sales for its ranked individual examples.

How to find out what your DVDs are worth
- Identify the copy. Read the case, spine, disc labels, and any barcode or release information. Note the exact edition, DVD format, region, label, and packaging—not just the movie or show title.
- Check current availability and reissues. Look for other editions of the same title. A readily available reissue can affect demand for an older release, while a discontinued edition may deserve closer comparison.
- Search completed or sold transactions. Use a marketplace’s sold/completed filter rather than relying on active listings. Match the edition as closely as possible; do not compare a DVD with a Blu-ray or a standard release with a special edition.
- Compare several recent matches. Note the date window, the number of matching sales, and the median or range rather than anchoring on the highest sale. A single high result may be an outlier or a different edition.
- Match condition and completeness. Check every disc and compare copies with similar cases, inserts, booklets, slipcovers, and outer boxes. Missing items, scratches, rental stickers, or damaged packaging can affect buyer interest and saleability.
- Estimate what you would actually keep. A completed sale is a gross sale price, not your proceeds. Allow for postage, platform fees, and the time it may take to sell; those costs vary, so verify them for your selling method rather than assuming a fixed deduction.
How to inspect and preserve a candidate
- Count the discs against the set’s stated contents and inspect each one for scratches or damage.
- Check for the original booklet, inserts, slipcover, and distinctive outer packaging. Keep them together; replacing packaging with a generic case may make a collector copy less complete.
- Describe condition accurately if you sell. Do not call a copy complete or like new unless its contents and condition support that description.
- Handle discs by the edge and return them to their original cases after checking. Avoid discarding original artwork or packaging while researching value.
What a high price listing does—and does not—tell you
An active listing shows what a seller hopes to receive; it does not show that a buyer paid that amount. Likewise, a “rare” label is not evidence of a completed sale. Treat prices as dated marketplace observations: region, condition, completeness, reissues, and local demand can change what a particular copy brings. The examples here come from US eBay data and should not be assumed to represent other countries, currencies, or marketplaces.
