Heretic is worth watching for Hugh Grant’s unnervingly controlled performance and the tense, idea-driven duel at its center. The film’s late turns do not quite match the force of its setup, but Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East give the suspense real resistance rather than leaving Grant to carry it alone.
What is Heretic about?
Scott Beck and Bryan Woods wrote and directed this 2024 A24 thriller, starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. Its spoiler-light setup is simple: two young missionaries knock on the wrong door and find themselves forced to prove their faith to a dangerous host. The premise turns a visit into a pressure-cooker encounter built around conversation, belief, and control. A24’s film page lists the film and its principal cast; AFI FEST’s description supplies the concise premise.

Is Heretic worth watching?
Yes, especially if you enjoy thrillers where dialogue and shifting power do as much work as physical danger. The film’s best stretch makes a seemingly ordinary conversation feel like a test: each exchange changes the balance between the missionaries and their host. Its theological discussion gives the suspense a distinct subject, while flashes of gore make clear that the threat is not merely intellectual.
The main reservation is the payoff. The setup is so contained and charged that the film risks feeling like an airless stage play as it moves along; the eventual ending can feel muddled beside the precision of the early tension. The Associated Press review makes a similar distinction, praising the draw of Grant and the film’s blend of theology, gore, and suspense while questioning the later movement and ending. Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial consensus also praises Grant’s against-type turn and cerebral chills while noting that the payoff falls short of the setup; its consensus can change as reviews are added, so no score is needed to make the point.
#1 Best Overall
Is Heretic scary?
It is more unsettling and suspenseful than relentlessly frightening. Much of the fear comes from watching a conversation turn into a contest, and from the missionaries’ uncertainty about how much danger they are in. The film does include bloody violence, but its distinctive chill comes from the host’s composure and the pressure he puts on the women to respond.
Is Hugh Grant good in Heretic?
Grant is the film’s defining performance. Rather than discarding the charm and wit audiences associate with his comic roles, he redirects them into something menacing: politeness becomes a means of control, and a conversational pause can feel like a warning. The result makes the host compelling without making him reassuring.
The Associated Press review identifies Grant’s transformation of his familiar persona as the film’s central draw. It also credits Thatcher and East with giving the missionaries fear, resolve, and the ability to challenge him. That balance matters: their performances keep the encounter from becoming a one-sided showcase, and help the dialogue carry the tension.
Grant described seeking out a difficult role as part of the appeal. He told the Associated Press, “I think human beings need challenges. It makes your beer taste better in the evening if you’ve climbed a mountain.”
