Heretic is a dialogue-heavy horror thriller in which two young missionaries face a deadly test of faith inside the home of the unnervingly genial Mr. Reed, played by Hugh Grant. Its strongest draw is less a steady stream of shocks than the collision of Grant’s menacing performance with questions about belief, disbelief and death. The film’s ideas and tense setup make for a compelling encounter, though its payoff may not satisfy everyone.

What is Heretic about?

Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, Heretic follows Sisters Barnes and Paxton, two young missionaries who knock on the wrong door and meet Mr. Reed (Grant). A24’s official synopsis describes a deadly cat-and-mouse game in which the women are forced to prove their faith. The confined encounter turns their visit into a contest of nerve and argument.

The premise is best approached without detailed plot spoilers: Reed challenges the women’s beliefs, and the movie makes that exchange part of its suspense rather than treating it as background. The film runs about 110 minutes; listings differ slightly, with AFI FEST giving 110 minutes and Apple TV and Rotten Tomatoes listing 1 hour 51 minutes.

How does Hugh Grant’s performance shape the film?

Grant’s casting turns his affable screen persona into an instrument of unease. Reed can sound welcoming even as the situation grows more threatening, making the contrast between civility and danger central to the film’s tension. It is an editorial strength of the performance, not a claim about Grant’s own personality.

The role was built with detailed character work. In the Directors Guild of America’s account of a November 24, 2024, Q&A, Woods said Grant sent lengthy emails about Reed’s thoughts, actions, references and historical context. Woods described how the directors discussed their responses together: “It was so helpful, Hugh’s process, because we’d receive an email and then talk about it like ‘I kind of saw it like this,’ and it gave us a chance to get on the same page about things as opposed to kind of BSing our way through it and pretending we know exactly what he’s asking about.” The collaboration offers a useful context for the specificity Grant brings to the role.

Grant told the Associated Press that taking on the part was “a challenge.” The film also has a few deliberately odd details amid its darker material. The directors’ November 8, 2024, A24 note mentions Bob Ross Monopoly, a blueberry candle and Grant’s Jar Jar Binks impression; Grant told the AP he believed the impression was his idea, while acknowledging he was unsure which details had been scripted.

What is the film saying about faith?

Heretic puts theological argument at the center of its thriller mechanics. Its questions include why someone should believe in God, why they should not, and what happens after death. Those are the filmmakers’ stated thematic questions, not evidence that Reed’s claims represent the directors’ beliefs or settle any religious debate. The arguments belong to a fictional antagonist in a story built around coercion and danger.

Beck and Woods wrote in their A24 note: “These questions are at the heart of Heretic, all rooted in awkward uncomfortable ungodly conversations.” That emphasis helps explain why the film spends so much time talking: debate itself is part of the contest between Reed and the missionaries. Viewers looking primarily for conventional shocks or gore may find the extended exchanges slower than expected; those drawn to cerebral chills and performance-driven suspense may find them the main attraction.

Does Heretic deliver on its setup?

The film’s setup invites anticipation of a decisive payoff, and reactions to the ending have been mixed. Rotten Tomatoes’ audience summary notes that the payoff may not match the setup, while its critics consensus describes the film as religious horror favoring cerebral chills and praises Grant’s “infectious fun playing against type.” These are platform summaries, not a definitive interpretation of the ending or a settled explanation from the filmmakers.

At access in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed an 89% Tomatometer from 295 reviews and a 76% Popcornmeter from 1,000+ verified ratings. These changing platform aggregates indicate different critical and audience responses; they do not represent every critic or viewer. If you are searching for an “ending explained” answer, it is worth distinguishing an individual reading of the payoff from a confirmed creator explanation.
