Lily Collins has said she moved from England to Los Angeles when she was six, was teased for her strong British accent, and wanted to fit in. She recalled repeatedly watching Peter Pan and saying its title. That childhood experience—not the dialect coaching she later used for acting roles—is the explanation she has given for how her everyday accent changed.
How did Lily Collins lose her British accent?
In a 2019 WIRED interview, Collins described the change as part of adapting to life in Los Angeles as a child. She said: “I did, I had a very, very strong British accent, but everyone made fun of me, and at that age, you just wanted to fit in so I used to watch Peter Pan over and over again and just say, Peter Pan, Peter Pan, Peter Pan.”
Her account points to childhood immersion and a desire to fit in, not a formal accent-training program. She did not describe a specific method or timeline for the shift. WIRED’s 2019 interview is the direct source for her recollection.
Did Lily Collins have a British accent as a child?
Yes. Collins said she was born in England and moved to Los Angeles at six with what she called a “very, very strong British accent.” She recalled being made fun of and wanting to fit in. A later CNA Lifestyle report reproducing remarks she gave HELLO! also describes the teasing and says she later wished she had kept the accent; the direct WIRED account is the clearest source for what she said about the childhood experience.

Did a dialect coach help her change her everyday accent?
The available interviews do not establish that. Collins discussed working with a dialect coach in 2019 in the context of preparing accents for acting roles, including Tolkien and Fantine. In The Guardian, she said: “There’s an extra level of pressure. I worked with a dialect coach as I needed it to be absolutely spot-on.” That is evidence of role preparation, not of a coach helping her lose her childhood accent.

In a 2021 ELLE UK interview excerpt published on her official website, Collins said: “I am British. I mean, I’m both, but I associate more with being British.” She also explained that British accents in her roles can feel natural even when she is putting one on. Her comments distinguish identity from the accent she uses in everyday life. The excerpt appears on Collins’s official website.
