Netflix’s 2024 TV-app redesign replaced the familiar vertical menu on the left side of the screen with a horizontal menu at the top. It also brought more information onto title cards and gathered personal picks such as My List and Continue Watching under My Netflix. The change first appeared as a test for some subscribers; Netflix now says the updated TV experience is available on most TVs and streaming devices, though some devices may still show the older layout.
Before and after: the TV menu moved to the top
In the older Netflix TV interface, navigation sat in a vertical panel along the left edge of the screen. Shortcuts such as New & Popular, My List and Categories were easy to spot there. In the 2024 redesign, Netflix moved the main navigation into a horizontal bar across the top of the screen. The result is a different way of getting around, not simply a new coat of paint.
The redesigned menu centers on Home, Shows, Movies and My Netflix. Shortcuts for games and profiles may also appear, depending on the device and availability. The precise labels and options can vary by country, profile, app version and TV platform. Netflix’s TV experience help page describes the current navigation and where to find familiar features.
What changed on the title cards?
The redesign puts more context next to the title you are considering. Depending on the interface and device, resting the cursor on a tile can reveal a description, runtime or other details, and a preview clip or trailer. The idea is to help viewers judge a title without repeatedly opening it and backing out to browse.

Netflix said it wanted to reduce the visual searching involved in choosing something to watch. In the later TV update announced in May 2025, it also highlighted more visible shortcuts, title callouts and recommendations intended to respond more readily to viewers’ activity. Callouts and previews are interface features, not a guarantee that every title will display the same information on every device.
Where the old shortcuts went

My List wasn’t deleted. It was folded into My Netflix, which can also include Continue Watching, liked titles, reminders and other personalized items. What appears in that hub may vary. Likewise, Netflix removed Categories and New & Popular as top-level shortcuts, not genre browsing or new-release and trending recommendations themselves.

How to get around
- Open Netflix on your TV or TV-connected streaming device.
- Use the top menu to choose Home, Shows, Movies or My Netflix. Select Search to find a title or browse genres.
- To find something new or trending, check the New on Netflix and Top 10 rows, as well as the Shows and Movies pages.
- To return to the top menu from the homepage, Netflix documents using the remote’s Back button. The exact behavior can depend on the device and remote.
Why Netflix changed the layout
Netflix’s stated aim was to make navigation simpler, make useful title details easier to see, and help recommendations respond to what people do while browsing—for example, watching a trailer or rating a title with a thumbs-up. The company has also been building an experience around more than films and series: its TV navigation can include games where available.

That is Netflix’s product rationale, not proof that every viewer will find the redesign easier. A top menu makes the main destinations prominent, and extra detail on a tile can help when you are undecided. But viewers who browse by genre may find Search less direct than the old Categories shortcut; people who head straight for recent releases may miss New & Popular; and some may prefer the old, more immediate route to My List. Preview clips may be useful to one viewer and distracting to another.

Was it really Netflix’s first big redesign in a decade?
Netflix’s 2024 redesign was described as its first major TV-interface overhaul in roughly a decade. Treat that as a characterization of the scale of the change, not a claim that the interface never changed in between: Netflix announced a major TV makeover in 2013 and another TV-interface redesign in 2018.
The 2024 change also unfolded in stages. It was initially tested with a subset of subscribers. Netflix’s current help documentation says the new TV experience is available on most TVs and TV-streaming devices, while unsupported devices may retain the previous interface. Netflix announced a further TV-experience update on May 7, 2025. That update is a later evolution of the TV experience, not the same announcement as the 2024 test.

Don’t confuse the TV redesign with Netflix’s mobile changes
The 2024 story was about Netflix on a TV, not every Netflix app at once. Netflix announced a separate mobile redesign in 2026. First check that you are using Netflix on a TV or TV-connected device; the TV layout does not describe the web or mobile app. Netflix says most TVs and streaming devices support the new experience, not all of them. If your platform allows it, update the Netflix app and device software, then restart the device and reopen Netflix. These steps can address an outdated app, but they cannot force Netflix to enable an interface on an unsupported device or guarantee a rollout. A menu running across the top is the clearest sign that you have the redesigned TV experience.
In practical terms, Netflix shifted discovery away from several fixed shortcuts and toward a top navigation bar, a consolidated personal hub and richer recommendation tiles. The biggest adjustment for returning viewers is knowing that My List is under My Netflix, genres are under Search, and new or trending titles are now surfaced through rows and the Shows and Movies pages.
