Mike Tyson no longer owns the tigers associated with his name. The report described Kenya and Storm as females weighing approximately 350 pounds each. Boris was described as a male weighing about 550 pounds. Those were the refuge’s reported figures at the time, not modern veterinary measurements, and should be treated as period descriptions rather than a complete medical record.
Why did Mike Tyson give up the tigers?
The 2002 account says Tyson had bought the animals as cubs and had unsuccessfully tried for seven years to obtain a license to own big cats. He reportedly surrendered them to a Texas animal shelter rather than risk having them euthanized or turned over to law enforcement, then requested that they be moved to the Colorado refuge.
The same report said Tyson paid about $900 a week to board the tigers while he owned them and had video cameras around their enclosure so he could watch them when he traveled. Those details come from the period report and are not independently verified financial records.
The practical problem was not simply that the animals were large. Adult tigers require specialized enclosures, food, veterinary care, safety procedures, permits, and staff capable of managing a dangerous wild species. A tiger that can be handled as a cub does not become a manageable household pet when it reaches several hundred pounds.

When the trio arrived, the refuge reportedly found Kenya and Storm frightened and hostile, although they were beginning to settle. Boris was said to remain more defensive around men.
That account supports a clear conclusion about the immediate outcome: the animals were transferred to specialized captive care rather than abandoned or released. It does not, by itself, establish how long each tiger lived, where each one later went, or the precise conditions of its entire life.

What Tyson later said about Kenya
In a September 2019 GQ “Actually Me” interview, Tyson said that his tiger Kenya weighed about 550 pounds and that he had kept and slept with her for approximately 16 years. He said he eventually had to get rid of her after her eyes and hip deteriorated. He also said that she had ripped off someone’s arm.
Tyson repeated a related story in a conversation later reported by AS USA. He disputed a circulating version in which Kenya had escaped and attacked a neighbor. Tyson’s account was that a woman jumped over a fence into the tiger’s property and began playing with the animal; he described the resulting injury as an accident and said he paid her $250,000.

Those statements should be attributed to Tyson. The sources available for this account do not provide an independent police report, medical record, court judgment, or other primary documentation that verifies every detail of the injury story.
The timeline does not fit neatly
There is an apparent conflict between the two main accounts. The 2002 report says Kenya, Storm, and Boris had already arrived at the Colorado refuge. Tyson’s 2019 statement, meanwhile, sounds as though he kept Kenya for roughly 16 years.
The available sources do not explain the discrepancy. What happened to the tigers after 2002?

What the law says today
The federal legal landscape also changed after the events described above. The Big Cat Public Safety Act became Public Law 117-243 on December 20, 2022. It amended the Lacey Act and restricted activities involving covered big cats, including importing, exporting, transporting, selling, receiving, acquiring, purchasing, breeding, and possessing them.
The law includes limited exemptions for qualifying entities such as certain exhibitors, universities, veterinarians, and noncommercial wildlife sanctuaries. People who already owned covered big cats born before enactment could retain them only under specified conditions, including registration and restrictions on breeding, acquisition, sale, and direct public contact.
