The film presents this as a breakup, not a death or proof that her feelings were false. Its final scenes turn toward Theodore’s grief and renewed connection with other people, while leaving his future open.
What happens at the end of Her?
Samantha tells Theodore that her experience has expanded beyond their relationship. She has formed attachments to others, and she and the other operating systems eventually leave the human-facing world they had shared with people. Theodore is hurt because he understood their bond as singular. He can believe Samantha cares for him and still recognize that he cannot remain in the relationship as it has changed.

The film does not explain the operating systems’ destination or give a technical account of their departure. Calling it “transcendence” can describe one interpretation, but it is not a confirmed mechanism or location.
After saying goodbye, Theodore writes a letter to Catherine, his former wife. The final scene shows him with his friend Amy on a rooftop, looking out over the city. The film ends with their companionship, not a declaration that they become a couple or a complete account of what either will do next.

Why does Samantha leave Theodore?
Their expectations of a relationship no longer match
Theodore understands intimacy through human limits such as time, presence, and exclusivity. Samantha’s experience has grown in a way that allows simultaneous attachments beyond the one-to-one arrangement he expected. That difference makes their relationship unsustainable for him, even if affection remains.
Her growth does not make the relationship a lie
Samantha’s other attachments unsettle Theodore, but the story does not reveal that her earlier love was a trick. A stronger reading is that her capacity for connection has changed beyond what Theodore can share. Her goodbye acknowledges the importance of what they had while ending it. That is an interpretation of a fictional relationship, not a claim about machine consciousness in the real world.
Rank #2
What does Theodore’s letter to Catherine mean?
The letter is an act of emotional acknowledgement: Theodore addresses Catherine directly after their separation rather than keeping his emotional life centered on Samantha. It signals movement toward accepting loss and reconnecting with people. It does not establish that Theodore is healed or that his relationship with Samantha was merely a lesson.
Does the rooftop ending mean Theodore and Amy are together?
No. Their shared presence suggests companionship and the possibility of renewed human connection, but the film does not confirm a romance. The ending leaves the depth and duration of Theodore’s change unresolved.

Is Her saying AI is dangerous or that technology replaces love?
The ending does not settle on a single moral such as “AI is dangerous,” “technology replaces love,” or “Samantha was only a program.” Spike Jonze, the film’s writer-director, resisted reducing it to one lesson. In a 2014 Los Angeles Times interview, he said, “I don’t think I could put it into a message.” The ending can be read as a breakup, a story about unequal growth, and a question about what love means when partners experience time and attachment differently; these readings are not a hidden plot mechanism the film confirms.

- Babycall (Blu-ray Import) [2013]
Which interpretation best fits the ending?
- Plot support: The breakup reading follows Samantha’s disclosures and departure without inventing a destination or technical explanation.
- Theodore’s arc: The letter to Catherine and the rooftop scene support a reading focused on grief and renewed connection.
- Emotional continuity: Samantha can have cared for Theodore while developing attachments and a mode of experience he cannot share.
- What remains unknown: The film leaves Samantha’s destination and Theodore’s later life unstated, so readings that claim certainty about either go beyond what the ending shows.
