She began in theatre, became widely known on television as DCI Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect, earned international film recognition as Elizabeth II in The Queen, and continued taking major stage roles—including the Broadway production of The Audience. Her story is one of movement among stage, television and film, not a departure from one medium for another.
How Mirren built her career on the stage
Mirren’s professional foundation was theatre. According to her official biography, she began playing Cleopatra with the National Youth Theatre, worked in repertory theatre in Manchester, and then joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). After four years with the RSC, she worked with Peter Brook’s Centre de Recherche Théâtral and toured Africa and America.

That early classical and ensemble experience was not a prelude she left behind. Mirren returned to major theatre work throughout her screen career, including the National Theatre’s 2009 production of Phèdre and the 2013 London production of Peter Morgan’s The Audience.
How television made her a household name
Mirren’s first leading television role was Cousin Bette in a BBC production in the 1970s. Her defining television role came later: DCI Jane Tennison, the determined detective at the center of Prime Suspect. The series began as a single drama and continued in further installments; Mirren returned to Tennison in 2003, and the final installment was released in 2006. Her official biography says she won an Emmy for Best Actress for that final Prime Suspect.

- Helen Mirren, Liev Schreiber
The role established her television profile without defining the limits of her career. Tennison was one prominent part of a body of work that continued across film and theatre.
How film brought wider international recognition

Her film work later brought major awards recognition. She received Academy Award nominations for The Madness of King George and Gosford Park, then won the 2007 Academy Award for Best Actress for playing Elizabeth II in Stephen Frears’s The Queen. The performance made a monarch into a character rather than a mere symbol, and gave Mirren one of the most visible roles of her film career.
She continued working in film after that award, with credits including The Last Station, Hitchcock, Woman in Gold, The Good Liar, The Duke and Golda. These credits sit alongside, rather than replace, her television and stage work.

How The Audience carried her from London to Broadway
Mirren’s Broadway recognition came through another performance as Elizabeth II. Peter Morgan’s The Audience first played in London in 2013, with Mirren in the title role. In 2015, the production transferred to Broadway’s Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre. Mirren won the Tony Award for Actress (Play) for the Broadway production; the Tony Awards archive records her as the 2015 winner for The Audience.
Her Broadway credits also include A Month in the Country, which earned her a Tony nomination, and The Dance of Death, opposite Ian McKellen. The Tony win was an important Broadway milestone, but it belongs to the same broader pattern as her career: major work in one medium arriving while she remained connected to others.

Why “from television to Broadway” is only part of the story
The phrase suggests a one-way career change, but Mirren’s chronology shows something more layered. Theatre came first; television brought broad recognition through Tennison; film brought the Academy Award for The Queen; and stage work continued, culminating in a Tony-winning Broadway role. The awards also recognize different kinds of achievement: the Academy Award honors a film performance, while the Tony recognizes work in live theatre.
In a 2024 statement reproduced on her official site, Mirren described the importance of telling stories about “the whole of humanity,” not only stories of youth or one type of story. Her career across classical theatre, crime drama, historical film and contemporary stage work reflects that breadth.
