Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen publicly denied involvement in the game’s revival and said he had not sold anything. The Flappy Bird Foundation, separately, said it acquired rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC. Those statements address different claims: Nguyen’s post describes his own involvement, while the Foundation’s account concerns its reported rights acquisition.
What did Dong Nguyen say about the new Flappy Bird?
On September 15, 2024, Nguyen posted: “No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto.” TechCrunch reproduced his statement and reported that the Foundation described itself as a new team of fans that acquired rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC. TechCrunch’s account and Ars Technica’s coverage report the remarks.
Nguyen’s denial is not, by itself, a ruling on who holds which rights. Likewise, the Foundation’s statement about acquiring rights does not establish that Nguyen sold them. The two claims should not be treated as interchangeable.
How did the reported trademark history fit in?
Ars Technica reported that Gametech opposed Nguyen’s trademark application, that Nguyen did not respond, and that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office entered a default judgment and canceled the mark in January 2024. Ars also reported that the Foundation acquired the trademark from Gametech. This is a reported trademark-proceeding timeline, not evidence that Nguyen personally sold the rights to the Foundation.

A USPTO filing identifies Dong Nguyen Ha as the applicant for a FLAPPYBIRD application, lists software and downloadable goods, and recites a registration held by the opposing company. The filing is a primary record of what was asserted in that proceeding; allegations in a pleading are not independent findings about every disputed historical fact. The USPTO filing can be read alongside Ars’s account of the outcome.
Why did crypto become part of the dispute?
Ars reported that materials it inspected referred to TON, Web3 and a $FLAP token. The same coverage noted uncertainty over whether those crypto elements were firm plans or had been abandoned. Nguyen’s post explicitly said he did not support crypto, but the cited reporting does not establish whether a particular token or wallet is active now, or what the revival’s final crypto plans became.

What was announced for the revival?
Coverage in 2024 described a mobile revival with additional characters and game modes planned for 2025. Those were plans reported at the time, not confirmation of what is available in October 2026. The sources cited here do not verify the revival’s current platform availability, latest features or final crypto status.
The contrast is between the original game associated with Nguyen and a revival presented by a separate team, with a broader set of announced modes and crypto-related references. In February 2014, when Nguyen removed the original game, TechCrunch quoted him saying: “I cannot take this anymore.” TechCrunch’s report covered that decision.

What do the current service terms say?
The current Flappy Bird service terms say the free game is funded by third-party advertising and that ads are not endorsements. They state that software, artwork, audio, the name and the logo are owned by Flappy Bird LLC or licensed to it, and prohibit copying, redistribution or derivative works without prior written permission.
