What is Heart Eyes about?
Heart Eyes is about a masked Valentine’s Day killer who hunts romantic couples, then mistakes coworkers Ally McCabe and Jay Simmonds for a couple. The 2025 film turns that misunderstanding into a blend of slasher suspense, workplace-romance awkwardness, comedy, bloody set pieces, and a killer-identity mystery.
The film’s official synopsis establishes the central premise: the Heart Eyes Killer has spent several Valentine’s Days stalking and murdering couples. Ally and Jay become endangered because the killer reads their relationship incorrectly, forcing two coworkers with romantic tension into a fight for survival.

Is Heart Eyes a horror movie or a rom-com?
Heart Eyes is both a horror-comedy romance and a slasher, rather than a conventional romance or a straight horror film. The movie gives meaningful space to Ally and Jay’s relationship while also using the killer, violent attacks, suspense, and mystery structure as central parts of the story.
Rotten Tomatoes classifies Heart Eyes under Holiday, Horror, Romance, and Comedy. TIME similarly describes the film as a horror comedy that is also a romance, or a playful version of a romantic comedy. The best short description is therefore “romantic-comedy slasher.”
| Element | How Heart Eyes uses it | What viewers should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Romance | Ally and Jay’s developing relationship is part of the main plot. | Workplace chemistry and romantic awkwardness between the two leads. |
| Slasher horror | The masked killer stalks and murders couples around Valentine’s Day. | Suspense, attacks, danger, and bloody set pieces. |
| Comedy | The film plays with romantic clichés and the absurdity of the killer’s rules. | Cheese, jokes, and deliberately heightened situations. |
| Mystery | The Heart Eyes Killer’s identity remains a question throughout the story. | Clues, misdirection, and a final-act reveal. |
| Holiday setting | Valentine’s Day determines who the killer targets and why. | Romantic imagery used as both a theme and a source of danger. |
Who stars in Heart Eyes?
Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding lead Heart Eyes as Ally McCabe and Jay Simmonds, the coworkers caught in the killer’s mistaken assumption. Josh Ruben directed the film, and Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon, and Michael Kennedy are credited as writers.
| Cast or creator | Role |
|---|---|
| Josh Ruben | Director |
| Olivia Holt | Ally McCabe |
| Mason Gooding | Jay Simmonds |
| Gigi Zumbado | Monica |
| Michaela Watkins | Crystal Cane |
| Jordana Brewster | Detective Jeanine Shaw |
| Devon Sawa | Supporting role |
The film’s unusual appeal depends on the leads carrying both sides of the premise: Ally and Jay need to function as a plausible romantic pairing while also surviving a conventional masked-killer threat. That combination makes lead chemistry as important as the individual horror set pieces.

Is Heart Eyes worth watching?
Heart Eyes is most likely to suit viewers who want romance and comedy alongside a slasher framework, rather than viewers seeking either a purely serious horror film or a conventional Valentine’s Day romance. The movie’s central decision is how successfully its romantic chemistry, jokes, gore, and killer mystery work together for a particular audience.
Rotten Tomatoes recorded a 78% Tomatometer score from 181 critic reviews and a 76% verified audience score from more than 1,000 ratings at the time of the dossier’s 2026 research access. Rotten Tomatoes’ scores and review counts are time-sensitive platform figures, so they may change.
The critics’ consensus describes a combination of a gory slasher and a sweet romantic comedy. The audience summary likewise emphasizes the mixture of romance, cheese, horror, and comedy. Those descriptions point to the film’s main trade-off: tonal variety is the attraction, but anyone wanting a consistently frightening or consistently sentimental movie may find the blend less predictable.

The Heart Eyes Killer mask is a plausible fan or costume search, but the available research found third-party listings rather than a clearly verified official licensed merchandise program. Treat any mask or costume listing as unofficial unless licensing and seller details are independently confirmed.

The structure is designed to make the audience revise its understanding of who has been behind the mask and how the killing operation works.
Without spoilers, the important point is that the movie does have a twist ending: the Heart Eyes Killer identity is not resolved by the first apparent answer. The reveal arrives in the final act and expands the mystery from a single masked attacker into a larger deception.
Bottom line
Heart Eyes is a 2025 romantic-comedy slasher for viewers who want a Valentine’s Day romance, a masked killer, comedy, gore, and a final-act mystery in the same film. Its strongest point of distinction is the way Ally and Jay’s mistaken identity as a couple makes the romance itself part of the slasher threat.
