Director James Gunn said he has “a big part of the plot” and singled him out as the standout among the film’s supporting heroes. That means a prominent place in the ensemble—not that Michael Holt replaces Superman as the lead, and not a measurable claim about screen time.
What James Gunn said about Mr. Terrific’s role
In a set-visit interview published by io9 on December 17, 2024, Gunn described Mr. Terrific as “the main character of those characters,” referring to the supporting heroes. He added: “He actually has a big part of the plot.” Gunn’s point was that these heroes are meaningful members of the supporting cast, rather than cameos, with Mr. Terrific particularly prominent among them.
That is a qualitative description of story importance. The interview does not give a screen-time total, scene count, or percentage of the plot devoted to him, so “big part” should not be read as a quantified claim.
Where Michael Holt fits in the story
DC identifies Mr. Terrific as Michael Holt, a genius with academic and athletic accomplishments who dedicates himself to helping others. That background explains the character’s comic-book identity, but it does not by itself establish particular actions or scenes in the film.

In its July 23, 2025 post-release account, DC describes the Justice Gang—Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl—as moving from corporate-owned heroes toward fighting for justice, influenced by Superman’s actions. This places Mr. Terrific’s importance within a larger ensemble arc: his role matters both as a supporting hero in the plot and as part of the group Superman affects. That is DC’s framing of the characters’ development.
Who plays Mr. Terrific in Superman (2025)?
Edi Gathegi plays Michael Holt, also known as Mr. Terrific. DC announced Gathegi’s casting during production in February 2024, and later described the movie as the character’s silver-screen debut. The film was written and directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet as Superman/Clark Kent. It began international release on July 9, 2025, followed by its nationwide U.S. release on July 11, 2025, according to DC’s film page.
