‘Hedda’ Review: Tessa Thompson Leaves Her Teeth Marks on a Classic

Tessa Thompson makes Hedda’s hunger for self-determination compelling without making her cruelty easy to defend in Nia DaCosta’s Ibsen reimagining.

Nia DaCosta’s Hedda makes its central character’s hunger for freedom hard to separate from her capacity to wound. Tessa Thompson gives that contradiction its sharpest expression: Hedda is watchful, witty and forceful, but her command of a room does not make her conduct defensible. The film’s most compelling idea is that wanting to live on one’s own terms can coexist with doing real damage.

What is Hedda about?

Written and directed by Nia DaCosta, this 2025 film is a modern reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler. Its official synopsis frames Hedda as caught between the ache of a past love and the suffocation of her present life. The story unfolds in 1950s England, in a world the Virginia Film Festival describes as lavish yet suffocating.

Tessa Thompson plays Hedda Gabler. The principal cast also includes Nina Hoss as Eileen Lovborg, Imogen Poots as Thea Clifton, Nicholas Pinnock as Judge Roland Brack and Tom Bateman as George Tesman. The film runs 1 hour 48 minutes according to its Prime Video listing.

How does DaCosta reshape Ibsen’s play?

The adaptation is more interesting as a change in emphasis than as a test of fidelity. DaCosta places Ibsen’s familiar struggle for control in a specific period and social world, then centers the tension between Hedda’s constrained circumstances and the power she tries to exert over others. That reframing makes her agency visible without presenting it as uncomplicated liberation.

Thompson has described her interpretation as a challenge to a familiar reading of the character: “Many think of her as a woman that’s suicidal,” she told the Associated Press. “I think of her as someone who’s dying to live, and dying to live on her own terms.” That distinction gives the film a useful interpretive lens, not an instruction to excuse Hedda. The desire for self-determination may command attention; it does not erase the harm she causes.

DaCosta is equally blunt about the moral unease at the story’s center. “Even though I love Hedda, she’s unforgivable and undefendable,” she said in an Associated Press report. The film’s strongest premise lies in holding both ideas together: Hedda can be compelling because she wants a life beyond her limits, and difficult to defend because she pursues control at other people’s expense.

What makes Thompson’s performance incisive?

Thompson’s strength is the tension between control and volatility. Her Hedda is not reduced to a stock portrait of a schemer: wit and composure suggest how carefully she reads the people around her, while flashes of force expose the pressure beneath that poise. The performance makes manipulation feel like an expression of power and a symptom of entrapment at once.

That is the sense in which Thompson leaves “teeth marks” on the classic. The phrase is earned less by simple ferocity than by the way she makes Hedda’s appetite legible without asking the audience to approve of it. The Los Angeles Times praised Thompson’s “wild and wicked” performance, while the Washington Post characterized the film’s Hedda as Black and queer. Those are critics’ readings, not substitutes for the film’s own complexity; together, they point to how forcefully this version invites viewers to reconsider who gets to claim autonomy.

Do the film’s style and pace serve its tragedy?

DaCosta’s staging and visual design give the story a sense of spectacle that suits the lavish enclosure of its setting. The formal ambition also creates a risk: style can sharpen the story’s emotional pressure, but it can compete with it if the film’s movement feels more striking than coherent.

That tension appears in the critical response. The Washington Post called the film sexy and propulsive; TIME praised its visual invention but found it somewhat disjointed, arguing that style can get in the way of substance. The disagreement captures the key question for viewers: whether the film’s visual energy deepens the tragedy or occasionally pulls attention away from it. Its ambition is clear, even if its cohesion may not land equally for everyone.

Is Hedda worth watching?

For viewers interested in adaptations that argue with their source rather than simply reproduce it, Hedda offers a substantial point of entry: a period reimagining, a morally difficult central character and a lead performance built around contradictions. Thompson is the film’s most persuasive reason to watch, particularly if you want to see Hedda’s hunger for freedom treated as forceful without being mistaken for innocence.

The film is listed on Prime Video, and the Associated Press reported its theatrical and Prime Video release context in 2025.
