The “September” in reports about HBO Max’s password-sharing crackdown was September 2025, not an upcoming date. Warner Bros. Discovery said it would step up enforcement and messaging then, but did not announce a single day when every shared account would be blocked. The policy distinction still matters: HBO Max says an account is for its owner and people in the same household. For one eligible person living elsewhere, the U.S. paid option is an Extra Member Add-On for $7.99 a month plus tax.
What Warner Bros. Discovery said about September 2025
In 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery streaming and games chief JB Perrette said the company would become more aggressive about identifying people who appeared to use an account from outside the owner’s household and prompting them to pay or get their own subscription. The company expected the effort to contribute financially from the fourth quarter of 2025 and into 2026, according to TheWrap’s report.

That was an enforcement escalation, not a published universal cutoff date. The announcement did not say every account shared between homes would be cancelled at once, nor did it disclose a complete detection method. HBO Max’s branding has shifted between “Max” and “HBO Max”; this article uses HBO Max for the service.

Who can use an HBO Max account?
HBO Max’s U.S. account-sharing guidance says an account is intended for the account owner and people who live in the same household. Being related to the account owner does not by itself make someone part of that household: a family member living elsewhere, including a student living at a separate residence, may count as outside it.

The published rule concerns household residence. It does not mean that an ordinary trip automatically violates the policy. HBO Max does not provide a complete public explanation of how it handles every travel, device, or location scenario. Reports have described efforts to identify likely non-household users, but the specific signals and thresholds have not been fully disclosed; claims that the service always checks a particular network or location method should be treated cautiously.
Official option for one person living elsewhere
Eligible U.S. subscribers billed directly by HBO Max can add one Extra Member for $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes, on top of the base subscription. The extra member gets a separate login, one adult profile, and one simultaneous stream. The feature is limited to one outside-household person, so it is not an unrestricted second household plan. The add-on is subject to country and age rules: the extra member must be at least 18 and in the same country where the owner signed up.

The extra member can stream wherever HBO Max is available, subject to geographic rules. They receive the features associated with the owner’s plan where applicable, including eligible 4K access on a Premium plan. The owner can transfer an existing adult profile so the extra member may keep its watch history and My List; kids profiles cannot be transferred. See HBO Max’s Extra Member terms and instructions.

The add-on is not available to everyone. HBO Max’s documentation limits it to subscribers billed directly through WarnerMedia/HBO Max. Accounts billed through Apple or Google, a TV, internet, or mobile provider, the Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle, or another third party may not qualify. Check the account’s subscription page to see who bills you; the billing provider may need to manage the subscription, and HBO Max may not be able to override that provider’s restrictions.

How an eligible subscriber sends the invitation
- Sign in at HBOMax.com/subscription.
- Select Get Add-Ons, choose Extra Member Add-On, then select Confirm & Pay Now.
- In account management, choose Manage Extra Members and then Send Invite.
- Enter the person’s name and email. Choose a new profile or transfer an existing adult profile, then send the invitation.
- The recipient opens the email titled “You’ve been invited to HBO Max as an Extra Member,” selects Accept Invite, creates a login with an email not already attached to an HBO Max account, and chooses Start Streaming.
The invitation expires after seven days. If it does not arrive, check spam and other filtered folders, confirm the email address, and have the owner cancel and resend the invitation if needed. If the link has expired, the email is already tied to an HBO Max account, or the recipient is in a different country, acceptance may fail. A recipient who is traveling should wait until back in the owner’s sign-up country before creating the extra-member account.
Choosing between the add-on and a separate subscription
For U.S. direct billing, HBO Max support materials show base-plan price signals of $10.99 a month or $109.99 a year for Basic with Ads, $18.49 a month or $184.99 a year for Standard, and $22.99 a month or $229.99 a year for Premium. These figures exclude applicable taxes and may differ by billing provider, promotion, legacy plan, bundle, or geography; confirm the price shown for your own account. The $7.99 add-on is billed in addition to the base plan, and the charges may fall on different dates. Current information is in HBO Max’s U.S. plan information and charge guidance.

An individual subscription can offer more control and may offer more simultaneous streams and profiles than the one-stream add-on. The right choice depends on the number of people who need access, the billing arrangement, and how much independence the viewer wants.
When the add-on is missing or access does not work
- No Extra Member option: Check the “billed through” provider on the subscription page. Third-party billing, a bundle, or an unsupported account configuration may make the add-on unavailable. If the provider bills you, consult its subscription-management process rather than assuming HBO Max can bypass the restriction.
- Invitation missing: Check spam, junk, promotions, and other filtered folders; verify the address; check whether seven days have passed; then ask the owner to cancel and resend it.
- Invite will not accept: Check the invitation’s expiry, the email already associated with an account, and the country requirement. If traveling, wait until you are back in the account owner’s sign-up country.
- Household member is flagged: Confirm that users on the account actually live in the same household, check the account and billing status, and contact HBO Max support if access remains blocked. The available public guidance does not establish a detailed appeals process or an official fix based on changing passwords, resetting devices, or using a VPN.
- Stream limit reached: The extra member’s one stream is separate from the household’s base-plan stream allowance, but the extra member still cannot watch on more than one device at a time. The base plan’s limits continue to apply to household users; see HBO Max’s stream guidance.
Cancellation and account changes
If the owner cancels the base subscription, the extra member loses access when that base plan expires. HBO Max says an unused portion of the Extra Member Add-On may be eligible for a prorated refund in that situation. If the add-on itself is cancelled, the extra member retains access through the current add-on billing period. The owner remains responsible for the base subscription and add-on charges.
For someone who wants their own plan, HBO Max’s documented route is to sign in, open the profile menu, select Subscription, choose Change Your Plan, select a plan and billing period, add a payment method, and select Start Streaming. A person billed through a third party may need to make subscription changes through that provider; see HBO Max’s billing and subscription guidance.
