Yes—Warner Bros. Discovery has said HBO Max’s password-sharing crackdown will expand globally during 2026, but that does not mean the same rules, fee, or enforcement date apply everywhere today. The core rule is that an account is for the subscriber and people who live in the same household. In the United States, eligible subscribers can pay $7.99 a month plus tax for an Extra Member; international subscribers should check their local terms and billing options rather than assume that price or feature is available to them.
What HBO Max is changing
HBO Max distinguishes between sharing within a household and letting someone who lives elsewhere use the account. Its U.S. account-sharing policy says accounts are intended for the owner and people who live in the owner’s household. Someone at another address is generally expected to get a separate subscription unless the account qualifies for an Extra Member Add-On.
That rule is about where people live, not whether they are related. A friend, adult child, parent, or sibling in another home can count as an outside-household user. Profiles and simultaneous streams are separate issues: having more than one profile or an available stream does not itself authorize sharing credentials with another household.

What “going global” means—and what it does not
Warner Bros. Discovery’s stated plan is to expand password-sharing enforcement internationally during 2026. That is a direction and timeframe, not evidence of a single worldwide launch date or proof that every HBO Max market is already enforcing the policy in the same way. The reported 2026 plan does not establish a universal international Extra Member price or identical eligibility terms across countries.
HBO Max has also been expanding into more markets. Warner Bros. Discovery’s global expansion announcement and pressroom document new-market activity. But a service launch in a country does not prove that paid sharing or enforcement began there on launch day. Availability, plans, billing methods, and policy details are market-specific; check the local HBO Max help center for the current terms.
U.S. subscribers: Extra Member basics
On HBO Max’s U.S. help pages, the Extra Member Add-On costs $7.99 per month plus applicable taxes. It is for eligible subscribers billed by WarnerMedia directly, not every customer. The extra member gets a separate email, password, and profile, and must be at least 18 and live in the same country as the account owner. The feature requires a base subscription; HBO Max’s Extra Member eligibility page lists exclusions for subscribers billed through app stores, internet, mobile, or TV providers, as well as certain bundles.

Those are U.S. terms, not a global price list. The available policy information also does not establish that all plans or markets allow the same number of extra members. Before budgeting for the add-on, check the feature and eligibility displayed for your country, plan, and billing arrangement.
Who is most likely to be affected?
- Friends at different addresses: This is the clearest case of ordinary external sharing. They will generally need their own subscription or, if eligible and available, an Extra Member invitation.
- Families split between homes: Family relationship alone does not create an exception in the stated household rule. Parents sharing with an adult child, or relatives in separate homes, may be treated as separate households.
- College students: The U.S. policy specifically says people who do not live with the account owner—including family members living elsewhere, such as at a college dorm—need their own account. The U.S. Extra Member age requirement also means a student under 18 cannot be added through that feature.
- Travelers: Temporary travel is not the same as routinely using an account from another residence. HBO Max’s public account-sharing information does not spell out a universal travel grace period or every verification scenario, so a traveler who encounters a prompt should follow its instructions or contact support rather than assume a fixed exception.
- Third-party-billed subscribers: If a provider or bundle bills the account, the Extra Member option may not be offered. Check who bills the subscription and whether that provider supports the add-on before making plans; do not assume HBO Max can activate it on any account.
What might happen if HBO Max flags sharing?
Do not assume every outside-household login will be blocked immediately. Depending on the account and market, a subscriber may see a household confirmation or verification prompt, a request for the outside user to subscribe, or an offer to add an eligible Extra Member. Access for an outside user may also be removed, and continued sharing contrary to the policy can affect the account owner’s ability to access HBO Max. The public support page does not promise a fixed sequence of warnings or a universal enforcement timetable.
Choose the option that fits your situation

If you pay through a provider, first check whether the add-on is supported. Moving to direct billing may be worth investigating only if HBO Max offers that route for your account and market; the published exclusions do not guarantee that switching is possible or will make you eligible.

If a legitimate household member is blocked
A location or device change can make ordinary household use look unusual, and HBO Max does not disclose enough detail to predict every flag. If someone who lives with the account owner is affected:
- Review the account’s signed-in devices. HBO Max says the device list can show details such as profile name, sign-in date, and country.
- Sign out of devices no longer in use and remove any you do not recognize.
- Confirm household members are using their own profiles and that no former user still has the credentials.
- If the prompt continues, contact HBO Max support and explain that the person is a member of the household. Repeated password changes without checking devices may not resolve the underlying issue.
A VPN is not a recommended fix. It is not an officially supported way to qualify as a household member and can introduce further location, payment, or catalog problems without changing the account’s billing eligibility.
Why Warner Bros. Discovery is doing this
The commercial aim is to turn viewing by non-paying users into paid extra members or full subscribers, while bringing more customers into a direct relationship with the service. The strategy is unfolding alongside HBO Max’s international expansion, but those are related business efforts—not proof that anti-sharing enforcement is already active in every new market. Warner Bros. Discovery has not provided a specific revenue figure for the crackdown in the evidence available here.

It fits a broader streaming-industry shift toward treating access outside a household as a monetization opportunity. That context does not mean HBO Max will copy Netflix’s or Disney+’s exact fees, verification methods, or household definitions. Its own market-specific terms are what matter.

Can I add an Extra Member if Apple, Roku, Amazon, a cable company, or a mobile provider bills me?

Will HBO Max block my account immediately?
