HBO GO’s Android TV app gained Android TV Voice Assistant support in the December 5–6, 2017 update. On compatible Android TV hardware, viewers could press the microphone button on a remote to search HBO GO and use voice playback controls. The release also added Oreo launcher integration, Watch Next resume links, better search recommendations, Watchlist sorting, bug fixes, and performance improvements. HBO GO is now a historical product: in the United States, it was discontinued on July 31, 2020 and replaced by HBO Max, later branded Max.
What happened in the December 2017 update?
Contemporaneous coverage published on December 6, 2017 described an Android TV app update that appeared in Google Play around December 5. An archived package identifies the release as HBO GO Android TV version 12.0.0.920. The original changelog used the term “Android TV Voice Assistant,” rather than describing a separate HBO voice assistant.
The update addressed common television-interface problems of the period: entering searches with a directional remote, finding recommended programs, and returning to an unfinished show without reopening several menus.

How viewers accessed it
On a compatible Android TV device, the microphone button on the remote invoked the platform’s voice layer. HBO GO added the app support needed for Android TV to search its content and pass playback actions into the app.
What the changelog confirms
- Voice search for HBO GO content.
- Voice playback controls.
Secondary coverage also reported launching HBO GO content and actions such as play, pause, and volume adjustment. Those broader behaviors depended on the device and rollout; the reproduced HBO changelog explicitly confirms search and playback controls, not an exhaustive list of commands. It is therefore more accurate to call this Android TV Assistant integration than to claim that every HBO title or every command worked universally.
Google provided the assistant
Google announced Assistant for Android TV in 2017, initially beginning with NVIDIA SHIELD TV in the United States and expanding to compatible Sony Bravia televisions and other devices. Google’s examples included finding and playing programs, pausing playback, changing volume, and controlling compatible smart-home equipment. Oreo launcher integration and Watch Next
The same update listed Android TV Launcher support for Android 8.0 Oreo. In practical terms, HBO GO could publish an unfinished program to the Android TV home screen’s Watch Next-style area, allowing a viewer to resume it without first opening HBO GO and navigating to a library.

Other Android TV app changes
- Recommended titles in search: Recommended HBO series and movies appeared on the search page.
- Watchlist ordering: Recently added items moved to the front of the Watchlist.
- Maintenance: The release included unspecified bug fixes and performance improvements.
What changed on phones and tablets?
HBO’s regular Android phone-and-tablet app received a parallel update, but the mobile changelog did not list Android TV Voice Assistant support. Its documented changes were recommended HBO series and movies on the search page, recently added Watchlist items appearing first, bug fixes, and performance improvements.

Hardware, software, and availability limits
Android TV and the remote
The app targeted Android TV devices, but installing the app was not the same as having Assistant. Voice use required a supported Android TV implementation, a compatible system update or regional rollout, and a remote with a microphone button. A box or television without that hardware could still run an app while lacking the described voice interface.
Android version requirements
The archived package reports a minimum Android API level of 21, corresponding to Android 5.0 at the package level. That does not mean every Android 5.0 device offered Assistant or Oreo launcher features. The Watch Next/launcher integration was specifically associated with Android 8.0 Oreo, while Assistant availability was controlled by the device platform and rollout.
Country, provider, and catalog restrictions
HBO GO access varied by country and participating television provider. A user needed an eligible HBO GO subscription, and the programs returned by search depended on the local catalog. The surviving reports do not establish a complete country-by-country device matrix, so the update should not be treated as universally available.

Can you still use this HBO GO update?
Not as a current U.S. streaming recommendation. HBO GO was discontinued in the United States effective July 31, 2020, as HBO moved distribution to HBO Max. An archived APK may remain discoverable, but installation does not restore the service and can fail because of shutdown authentication, region restrictions, obsolete APIs, or unavailable backend systems.
For current Android TV users, HBO’s support guidance directs viewers to the official HBO Max/Max app through Google Play on supported devices. The U.S. support page lists Android TV OS 7.1 or later: HBO Max Android TV support. Requirements and availability can differ by country; another regional support page is available here. HBO also does not support installing the current app outside the official store.
Do not infer that today’s Max voice commands, catalog, plans, or device behavior are identical to HBO GO’s 2017 integration. The old changelog documents a specific app and platform release, not a continuing feature promise.
Why the update matters in Android TV history
The release shows an early attempt to make a subscription video app part of Android TV’s system experience rather than a self-contained grid of menus. Voice search reduced text entry, Watch Next connected HBO GO to the home screen, and Watchlist sorting reduced the work of locating newly saved items. Its importance is historical: it records how streaming apps were adapting to Android TV’s first wave of Assistant and content-launcher features before HBO GO gave way to HBO Max.
The Bottom Line
The December 2017 HBO GO Android TV update added genuine Android TV Voice Assistant integration, Oreo Watch Next support, and several navigation improvements. It was version 12.0.0.920-era app history, not a current HBO or Max feature announcement; U.S. viewers now need the supported HBO Max/Max app instead.
