Its brisk first season gives the premise plenty of energy, but leaves less room for its crowded world and character arcs to breathe.
What is Hazbin Hotel about?
Created by Vivienne Medrano, Hazbin Hotel follows Charlie, princess of Hell, as she tries to rehabilitate demons through a hotel. The premise turns redemption into the engine of an adult animated fantasy: Charlie’s hopeful project faces the skepticism and competing interests of the people around her. Prime Video’s official Season One listing describes the series and its characters.
Do the songs strengthen the story?
Yes, the musical format is one of the show’s clearest strengths. Songs give characters a way to express motives and feelings in a heightened register, and help the show move between comedy, conflict and emotional stakes. They are part of the storytelling’s identity rather than a decorative break from it.
That approach works especially well in a series built around a theatrical premise and an ensemble. The tunes, voice cast and overall charm are among the elements RogerEbert.com highlights in its review. The songs are a major reason the series feels distinctive, even as the amount of story competing for attention can make individual moments pass quickly.

Does the first season give the characters and world enough room?
Not always. The season has to introduce an elaborate setting, establish an ensemble and develop Charlie’s attempt at reform while keeping its plot moving. In a short run, those demands can make the storytelling feel compressed: ideas and character turns arrive quickly, with limited time for some of them to settle.
Prime Video lists episodes at around 25 minutes each. That brisk format supports the show’s momentum, but also helps explain why its world and cast can feel densely packed. RogerEbert.com notes the pressure created by the intricate setting and ensemble in a short season. Critical responses are not unanimous; Rotten Tomatoes’ season page displays a range of reactions rather than a single consensus.

Is Hazbin Hotel worth watching?
For viewers drawn to original musical numbers, eccentric fantasy and an earnest redemption premise, it is a strong pick. Its biggest trade-off is pace: the same compact storytelling that keeps the season lively gives its setting and some character arcs less space than their ambition invites. Whether that balance works for you depends on whether you prefer an energetic, densely plotted ensemble or a slower character study.
