Short answer: “Hawk Tuah” came from a June 11, 2024 street interview in Nashville in which Haliey Welch gave a sexually explicit answer to a question about what makes a man go crazy in bed. The clip became a meme because of Welch’s memorable sound effect, delivery, and the ease with which people could remix it.
The often-repeated $65,000 figure does not establish that Welch personally earned $65,000. It was an estimate of gross merchandise sales: roughly 2,000 hats at a reported starting price of $32.78 each, or about $65,560 before costs, taxes, fees, and any division of revenue.
What does “Hawk Tuah” mean?
“Hawk Tuah” is a phonetic imitation of a spitting sound. In the original interview, Haliey Welch paired the phrase with “spit on that thang” while answering a question about a sexual act involving oral sex. The phrase is therefore sexually explicit in context, even though the two-word sound effect became detached from its original meaning as it spread online.
The expression was not a traditional catchphrase or an established term. Its appeal came from the suddenness of the answer, Welch’s Southern-inflected delivery, and the fact that the sound was short, distinctive, and easy for other people to repeat.

Where the Hawk Tuah meme started
The interview took place in Nashville’s Broadway district on June 11, 2024, according to contemporaneous reporting. The interviewers were Tim Dickerson and DeArius Marlow, who operate the Nashville street-interview channel Tim & Dee TV.
Tim & Dee TV distributed the footage through its social and video channels. A longer version of the interview was also published, but the short excerpt containing Welch’s answer became the main viral unit. Reposts and edited versions circulated widely on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, podcasts, sports accounts, and brand social-media feeds.
That distinction matters: the meme did not originate from a later commercial campaign or from a scripted advertisement. It came from a brief moment in a street interview that was then repeatedly clipped, captioned, imitated, and repurposed.
Who is Haliey Welch, the “Hawk Tuah Girl”?
Haliey Welch is the Tennessee woman featured in the Tim & Dee TV interview. She became known online as the “Hawk Tuah Girl,” a nickname that attached her identity to the phrase almost immediately after the clip went viral.

Some early coverage and search results spelled her first name “Hailey,” but “Haliey” is the spelling that should be used.
Why did the clip spread so quickly?
The meme had several qualities that make short-form internet content highly portable:

- Various activities: Party, running, jogging, hiking, climbing, baseball, tennis, golf
- It was brief. Users could understand the joke in a few seconds without watching the full interview.
- It had an unmistakable sound. The phrase worked as an audio cue as well as a quotation.
- It sounded spontaneous. Street interviews create the impression that viewers are seeing an unplanned reaction rather than a polished performance.
- It was easy to remix. People could add the phrase to reaction videos, sports clips, captions, skits, and unrelated footage.
- It was provocative but flexible. The original context was sexual, but later users often deployed the sound as a general-purpose punchline.
Forbes reported that the phrase had appeared in tens of thousands of TikTok videos by late June 2024. Brand accounts also joined the trend, including social posts or references associated with In-N-Out, LIV Golf, and WWE. High-profile references from figures such as Joe Rogan, Howard Stern, and Philadelphia Phillies player Bryce Harper helped move the meme beyond its original short-video audience.
That amplification illustrates how a meme can become mainstream without having a fixed definition. The original meaning remained part of the joke, but the phrase increasingly functioned as a recognizable sound and cultural reference.
How the reported $65,000 figure was calculated
The $65,000 claim came from early reporting about merchandise associated with Welch’s viral fame. Rolling Stone reported that Fathead Threads, a Tennessee apparel and embroidery company connected with Welch’s brand manager Jason Poteete, had sold slightly more than 2,000 hats. The least expensive hats were reported to cost $32.78.
| Reported detail | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Approximately 2,000 hats sold | The reported sales volume |
| $32.78 starting price | The reported price of the least expensive hats |
| 2,000 × $32.78 | Approximately $65,560 in gross sales |
| Exact proceeds and Welch’s share | Not publicly disclosed in the reporting |
That arithmetic explains why headlines referred to “at least $65,000” in sales. It was an estimate based on the number of hats and the lowest reported price, not an audited financial statement. The merchandise included “Hawk Tuah ’24” hats in multiple colors and a signed version, so the actual product mix may have differed from the simple calculation.
At the time of the early reporting, Fathead Threads was described as the only officially licensed vendor. Other sellers also produced Hawk Tuah-themed hats, shirts, stickers, flags, and accessories, but the existence of those products did not make them official Welch merchandise.
Shopping note: Readers looking for the type of physical memorabilia discussed in the sales story may encounter third-party marketplace listings when searching for a Hawk Tuah hat. This research did not verify a currently available official Amazon listing or official licensing for Amazon sellers. Any marketplace result should therefore be treated as third-party merchandise, not as proof of endorsement or authorization. This article may contain affiliate links.
Did Haliey Welch personally make $65,000?
There is no evidence in the cited reporting that Welch personally took home $65,000. The defensible description is that the merchandise operation had reportedly generated at least about $65,000 in gross sales at that early stage.

Gross sales are not the same as profit or personal income. The reported figure does not tell readers:
- how much the hats cost to manufacture;
- how much was spent on shipping, fulfillment, packaging, or refunds;
- whether payment processors or platforms deducted fees;
- how taxes affected the result;
- how revenue was divided among the apparel company, managers, licensors, and Welch; or
- how much money Welch personally received.
Those distinctions are why “Haliey Welch made $65,000” is too strong. “The merchandise operation reportedly generated at least $65,000 in gross sales” is the more accurate formulation.
From a viral clip to Talk Tuah
Welch later attempted to turn the short-lived meme into a broader media business. Betr Media announced the Talk Tuah podcast in September 2024, presenting Welch as a new content creator within its media portfolio.

The podcast represented a second stage of monetization. Merchandise captures a one-time burst of demand; a podcast can create recurring episodes, guest appearances, sponsorship opportunities, and a more durable relationship with an audience. That does not guarantee lasting success. Podcast rankings and audience estimates can change quickly, so early reports of strong chart performance should be treated as time-specific rather than proof of permanent popularity.
What happened with the $HAWK cryptocurrency?
In December 2024, a cryptocurrency token branded around Hawk Tuah launched and rapidly lost most of its value. The event became a major reversal in the story because it connected a lighthearted meme brand with the risks of speculative digital assets.

A federal securities complaint filed on December 19, 2024 alleged that the token was an unregistered security and that promoters used Welch’s public profile to market it. Those statements are allegations in a legal complaint, not adjudicated findings. The complaint alone does not establish criminal wrongdoing, fraud, or final legal liability.
The related federal case is identified as In re $HAWK Token Securities Litigation, No. 1:24-cv-08650, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Case-history materials reported that related actions were consolidated under that caption on October 27, 2025. As of August 12, 2026, the litigation was reported as still pending.
Welch’s own podcast listing shows that she discussed the controversy in the May 20, 2025 episode. The episode listing confirms that she addressed the subject publicly; it does not, by itself, prove the truth of any defense, allegation, or account given by any party.

The meme’s sudden popularity produced a large amount of unreliable commentary. Forbes specifically identified a satirical social-media claim that Welch had been fired from a preschool-teaching job. Reporting also found no basis for rumors that she had secured a representation deal with UTA.
More broadly, readers should be skeptical of claims that Welch became a millionaire, personally kept all merchandise revenue, or was fired from a teaching position. Viral posts frequently turn an estimated business-sales figure into a claim about personal wealth, while satire and reposts can make an invented biography look like established reporting.
The safest approach is to separate four categories that are often collapsed together:

What the Hawk Tuah story shows about viral fame
The meme’s business trajectory followed a familiar pattern: a highly reusable clip created attention, attention produced merchandise demand, and the personality associated with the clip moved into longer-form media. The speed was unusual, but the underlying mechanics were not. A phrase that is easy to recognize can become an audio brand, a product label, and a recurring content hook within weeks.
The financial lesson is more important than the headline. Viral commerce often produces impressive gross-revenue numbers before anyone knows the costs, ownership structure, or personal payout. In Welch’s case, the reported $65,000 was meaningful evidence that the meme had commercial value, but it was not evidence of $65,000 in personal profit.
