The result drew attention alongside Beyoncé’s record-setting night, but the available reporting does not establish that viewers broadly expected a different winner.
Who won Album of the Year at the 2023 Grammys?
The Recording Academy’s official results name Harry Styles’ Harry’s House as the Album of the Year winner at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. The category recognizes a wider group than the lead performer alone: the artist, featured artists, songwriters, producers, recording engineers, mixers and mastering engineers may be recognized for the album’s overall achievement.
Styles had six nominations at the 2023 ceremony when Harry’s House and his song “As It Was” are counted together; that was not six nominations for the album by itself. The Recording Academy’s 65th Annual Grammy Awards results and its Album of the Year category record document the outcome.
What happened when Styles accepted the award?
In a later account of the ceremony, the Recording Academy says superfan Reina Lafantaisie announced Styles as the winner and shared a celebratory hug with him before he spoke. Styles thanked those around him and acknowledged the artists nominated alongside him, including Beyoncé, Adele, Lizzo and Coldplay.

He said, “On nights like tonight, it’s important for us to remember that there is no such thing as ‘best’ in music.” The Academy also quotes him saying he had been “so, so inspired by every artist in this category.” He added that artists do not sit in the studio making decisions based on what might win them an award. These were Styles’ reflections during his acceptance speech, not an explanation of how Grammy voters reached their decision. The Recording Academy’s retrospective on the acceptance recounts the moment and quotes his remarks.
Why was the win described as a surprise?
The ceremony’s context helps explain why Styles’ win attracted attention: Beyoncé’s Renaissance was also nominated for Album of the Year, and the Associated Press reported that Beyoncé won four awards that night, reaching 32 career Grammy wins. The Academy lists her win for dance/electronic music album as a separate category result.

Those facts establish a high-profile awards night, not a consensus about who viewers thought would win. The reporting cited here does not provide audience polling or another quantified measure of expectations, so claims that “everyone expected Beyoncé” or that the room was shocked go beyond what it establishes. “Surprise” is best understood as the story’s framing unless a particular reaction is attributed to a named person or outlet. The Associated Press’ contemporaneous account of Beyoncé and Styles at the Grammys provides the ceremony context.
