John Lithgow said he did not expect criticism tied to J.K. Rowling when he accepted the role of Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s Harry Potter adaptation. In an April 2025 interview with The Times, as reported by TVLine, he recalled a friend urging him to walk away and asked, “Why is this a factor at all?” He said the backlash had not changed his decision. In February 2026, he spoke more directly about Rowling’s views and why he sees them as at odds with the books’ themes.
Why was John Lithgow surprised by the backlash?
The criticism arose after Lithgow accepted the Dumbledore role and focused on Rowling’s views on transgender rights. Lithgow told The Times, as reported in April 2025 by TVLine, that he had not anticipated the reaction. A friend who is the mother of a trans child sent him an open letter urging him to leave the project.
Lithgow said he wondered how Rowling had taken in the criticism, and described his own first reaction: “I thought, why is this a factor at all?” The question captured his surprise that Rowling’s views would become a consideration for him after he had signed on.
What did Lithgow say about accepting the role?
In the same April 2025 interview, Lithgow described the job as an eight-year commitment. He said his age and mortality were on his mind: “It’s an eight-year commitment so I was just thinking about mortality and that this is a very good winding-down role.” That was part of his thinking, not a claim that it was his only reason for taking the part.

How did his comments change by February 2026?
At the Rotterdam Film Festival in February 2026, Lithgow’s comments were more explicit. The Guardian reported that he said, “I take the subject extremely seriously,” and called Rowling’s views “ironic and somewhat inexplicable.” He also said, “It upsets me when people are vehemently opposed to me having anything to do with this.”

He explained the distinction he sees between Rowling’s views and the story’s moral outlook: “But in Potter canon you see no trace of transphobic sensitivity.” Lithgow pointed to the books’ emphasis on acceptance, kindness, and the conflict between good and evil. His later remarks show a clearer criticism of Rowling’s views than the surprise he described in April 2025.
What is Rowling’s role in the adaptation?
The descriptions of Rowling’s involvement should be kept distinct. The Guardian identifies her as an executive producer. Lithgow, who said he had never met her, characterized her as “not really involved” in the production. Those statements refer to different things: a credited production role and his personal assessment of her involvement.
