2001: Liam’s adoption came before Ford and Flockhart met
Calista Flockhart adopted Liam in 2001, one year before the couple’s documented meeting. That distinction matters: Ford was not Liam’s parent before Ford and Flockhart began their relationship. ABC News identified Liam as the couple’s son in its wedding coverage, and retrospective reports say Ford later adopted him. Liam attended the 2010 ceremony.

2002: They meet at the Golden Globes
Ford and Flockhart’s clearest starting point is the 2002 Golden Globes. Ford was there to receive the Cecil B. deMille Award. Looking back, he said, “That’s where I met my wife, so it has particularly good memories for me.” The Golden Globes organization published that recollection in a 2011 retrospective.
ABC News likewise reported that the two began dating after meeting at that ceremony. The public record is less precise about their first date and the early mechanics of their courtship, so a more specific first-date sequence cannot be established confidently.

2003: Ford confirms he is in love
Ford’s June interview
By June 2003, Ford was willing to discuss the relationship publicly. Elle’s 2025 retrospective quotes his People interview: “I’m in love,” he said, adding that romantic love can happen at any stage of life. The quote records what Ford said in that interview; it is not independent proof of every aspect of the couple’s private life.
Flockhart on their age difference
Flockhart also addressed the couple’s 22-year age gap in comments reproduced by ABC News and Elle: “It doesn’t faze me. Sometimes I even say, ‘Wow, I keep forgetting that he’s [22] years older than me.’ It doesn’t factor into our relationship at all.” Elle’s timeline also reports that she had moved in with Ford earlier in 2003.
February 2009: Ford proposes
The engagement is generally placed on Valentine’s Day 2009. Elle’s retrospective timeline says Ford proposed while the family was on vacation. This is the source of the commonly cited 2009 date—not the wedding year.
June 2010: They marry in Santa Fe
ABC News reported the wedding on June 17, 2010, saying Ford and Flockhart had married Tuesday in New Mexico after eight years of dating. The ceremony took place at the New Mexico governor’s mansion in Santa Fe. Former governor Bill Richardson hosted and was reported as the officiant, with his wife; because Richardson was not ordained, New Mexico Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Daniels also attended. Liam was present.

A 2011 Golden Globes retrospective incorrectly described the marriage as taking place in June 2009. Contemporary ABC News coverage, along with later timelines from Elle and Town & Country, places the wedding in June 2010. The 2009 date refers to the proposal.
Public appearances after the wedding
The couple have generally kept their relationship out of detailed public discussion. Dated appearances provide a record of when they were seen together, but they should not be treated as evidence about how the marriage was going privately.

Elle lists Ford and Flockhart at a Lakers game in February 2015 and another in January 2016. The same timeline records a trip to Spain in June 2016.

In a 2020 Parade interview reproduced by Elle, Ford was asked for a key to a happy marriage and answered, “Don’t talk. Nod your head.” It was delivered as a joke, not as a documented formula or serious relationship advice.
How much of their private relationship is known?
The documented milestones are the 2002 meeting, the 2003 public comments, the 2009 proposal and the June 2010 wedding, followed by occasional public appearances. Beyond those records and selected interviews, the couple have shared relatively little detail. A red-carpet photograph, awards appearance or sports outing can establish that they attended an event together; it cannot establish the condition of their marriage away from the cameras.
