Happy Traum, the New York folk musician, guitarist and teacher whose career connected the Greenwich Village folk revival to Bob Dylan’s recordings and generations of music learners, died on July 17, 2024, at age 86. His legacy reaches beyond his work as a performer: with his wife, Jane, he built Homespun Music Instruction into a lasting resource for musicians.
Who was Happy Traum?
Born Harry Peter “Happy” Traum on May 9, 1938, he became part of the New York folk scene and was later associated with Woodstock. NAMM’s oral-history record lists his birth and death dates; the Times Union reported that he was 86 when he died. NAMM’s Happy Traum oral history and the Times Union obituary document those details.
How did Happy Traum work with Bob Dylan?
Traum’s connection to Dylan began in the folk community they shared. Traum was a member of the New World Singers, who recorded an early version of Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.” Years later, he joined Dylan in the studio: on 1971 recordings, Traum played guitar, banjo and bass and sang harmony on songs including “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” “Down in the Flood” and “I Shall Be Released.” The NAMM oral history, Old Town School of Folk Music account and Times Union obituary describe the different parts of that relationship.
What was Homespun Music Instruction?
Happy and Jane Traum co-founded Homespun Music Instruction in 1967, turning his commitment to teaching into an enduring music-education project. The Old Town School of Folk Music describes Homespun’s catalog as containing more than 500 lessons, distributed in multiple formats and later developed into an on-demand streaming platform. His partnership with brother Artie
Traum also performed with his brother Artie as a duo. The brothers appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in 1968 and 1969 and remained musical partners until Artie died in 2008, according to the Times Union obituary.
How fellow musicians remembered him
Cindy Cashdollar, a friend of Traum’s for more than 40 years and a musician who plays Dobro, lap steel and steel guitar, told the Times Union, “He was ageless,” describing him as “a very giving and buoyant person who really enjoyed life.” Jorma Kaukonen recalled, “He played and sang with flawless expertise and love.” Both recollections appear in the Times Union obituary.
