Happy is no longer living like a golf champion. He works at a grocery store, has four sons to care for and has lost much of the money and stability he once had. His comeback puts him against Frank Manatee, the businessman behind Maxi Golf, a flashy rival league built around stunts and spectacle. That conflict gives the film two connected stories: Happy’s attempt to repair his family life and a comic argument over whether golf is a sport, a tradition or an entertainment product.
Cast: who returns in the sequel?
- Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore: The former hockey player whose powerful slap-shot swing made him a golf sensation returns as a rusty, financially troubled father trying to get back on the course.
- Julie Bowen as Virginia: Bowen returns as Virginia, Happy’s wife and an important part of the sequel’s backstory and emotional connection to the first movie.
- Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin: Happy’s old rival comes back after years in an institution and becomes part of the sequel’s larger conflict.
- Ben Stiller as Hal L.: Stiller reprises the orderly associated with the original film. Here, Hal is connected to Happy’s recovery and alcohol-treatment storyline.
- Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known as Bad Bunny, as Oscar Mejias: The musician and actor is one of the sequel’s most prominent new additions.
- Benny Safdie as Frank Manatee: Safdie plays the businessman who creates the Maxi Golf league.
- Haley Joel Osment as Billy Jenkins: Billy is a prominent Maxi Golf player aligned with Manatee.
- Sunny Sandler as Vienna: Happy’s daughter, whose ballet ambitions provide the immediate financial reason for his comeback.
- Sadie Sandler as Charlotte: Charlotte is an ally to Happy in the H.A.L. alcohol-treatment program.
- Blake Clark: Clark appears in a supporting role connected to Happy’s training.
The film also reunites Sandler with a number of performers and collaborators associated with his earlier comedies. Not every familiar face is a major character: the movie uses many celebrities as brief appearances, golf personalities and callback-driven cameos.
Golfers, athletes and celebrity cameos
The cameo roster is one of Happy Gilmore 2’s main attractions. Netflix’s promotional material highlights Bad Bunny, Eminem, Steve Buscemi, Travis Kelce, Eric André, Benny Safdie and a large group of professional golfers. The golf-related appearances specifically promoted around the release include:
- John Daly
- Paige Spiranac
- Rory McIlroy
- Scottie Scheffler
- Bryson DeChambeau
- Brooks Koepka
- Justin Thomas
- Will Zalatoris
A more extensive cameo list reported by Time also includes Kelsey Plum, Andrew Watt, Margaret Qualley, Dan Patrick, Nelly Korda, Nancy Lopez, Fred Couples, Nick Faldo, Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Lee Trevino, Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Bubba Watson, Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, Marcello Hernandez, Stephen A. Smith, Boban Marjanović, Robert Smigel and Lavell Crawford.

These appearances should be understood as a cameo ensemble rather than a conventional supporting cast. Netflix has said that golfers, athletes, musicians, comedians and Sandler collaborators joined because they were fans of the original movie and wanted to be part of its return.
Happy Gilmore 2 plot summary
The story begins roughly three decades after Happy’s first Tour Championship victory. The once-famous golfer has fallen a long way. His finances are in bad shape, his drinking has taken a serious toll and he is trying to manage life as a parent rather than as a sports celebrity. Working at a grocery store and raising four sons, Happy is far removed from the reckless but successful player audiences remember.

The sequel gives that decline a tragic explanation. Virginia is killed after being accidentally struck by one of Happy’s powerful drives. Her death leaves Happy responsible for the children and burdened by guilt. His grief and alcohol use push him further away from golf and from the people who need him.
Happy eventually chooses to play again because Vienna has an opportunity to attend a prestigious ballet program in Paris. The money required is beyond what he can earn at the grocery store, so he treats golf as a possible way to support his daughter. The comeback is therefore not simply a bid to reclaim fame. It is an attempt to meet a family obligation while recovering control of his life.
His return brings him into the orbit of Maxi Golf, a rival league created by Frank Manatee. Maxi Golf turns golf into an exaggerated entertainment spectacle, using flashy stunts and show-business presentation to attract attention. Billy Jenkins is one of the league’s leading players and stands on the opposite side of the film’s central sporting conflict.
Happy’s rough, old-school style is deliberately contrasted with Manatee’s polished commercial product. The difference is comic, but it also gives the sequel a recognizable theme: Happy represents the unruly mythology of the original movie, while Maxi Golf represents the pressure to turn every sport into a branded event.
Shooter McGavin remains tied to Happy’s story. After spending years in a mental institution, Shooter returns to public life and becomes involved in the renewed competition. His presence supplies the old rivalry, while the new Maxi Golf conflict expands the stakes beyond a personal grudge.

The climax leads to a new Tour Championship-style contest and a confrontation involving the Maxi Golf players. Happy’s performance on the course becomes a vehicle for more than winning: he is trying to reconnect with his children, confront the damage caused by his drinking and resist a version of golf built primarily for spectacle. The movie also uses that final competition to bring together its returning characters, new players and large cameo cast.
How the sequel differs from the 1996 original
The first Happy Gilmore was built around a young man discovering that his violent hockey slap shot could make him an unconventional professional golfer. Its emotional engine was Happy’s anger and his determination to save his grandmother’s home. Nearly 30 years later, the sequel gives him a more complicated problem: he must provide for his children while dealing with bereavement, addiction and the consequences of the life he led after becoming famous.

- Easy to Carry: the kid golf set is lightweight and portable, convenient to carry, the golf putter is about 33.7 inches/ 85.5 cm in length and can be split into 4 parts for easy storage and carrying, so you can easily put them in your bag or backpack when going to the putting green
- Quality Material: the golf clubs are composed of quality aluminum alloy shaft and zinc alloy head with thick and sturdy coating, comfortable to hold, the golf balls are made of highly elastic stuffed material and synthetic rubber shell, waterproof and wear resistant, measuring about 1.65 inches/ 42 mm in diameter, allowing beginner golfers and kids to enjoy the fun of golfing

That change in age and responsibility is the film’s most important update. Sandler is not merely replaying the original underdog formula. The sequel asks what happens when an impulsive sports hero grows older without successfully moving past his worst habits. Golf becomes both a source of money and a possible route toward recovery.
The story also sets traditional golf culture against Maxi Golf’s deliberately artificial showmanship. This lets the film preserve its broad physical comedy while commenting on the way sports are packaged for modern audiences. The result remains nostalgic, but the family and recovery material gives the comeback a different emotional purpose.

Merchandise and the Happy Gilmore Meal
Netflix promoted official official Happy Gilmore 2 merchandise through Netflix Shop, including apparel, hats, hoodies, mugs, pajamas and T-shirts. The collection is relevant to fans looking for licensed movie products, but inventory, sizes, prices and delivery estimates are changeable. Confirm that a product is still available and that licensing is identified on the official listing before buying.
The film also received a documented Subway promotional campaign in 2025. The “Happy Gilmore Meal” used Shooter McGavin as its ambassador, and Netflix said the campaign included custom social content featuring Christopher McDonald and professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau. This was a release-period partnership; it should not be treated as a current promotion unless Subway or Netflix has reactivated it.
Production, callbacks and franchise context
Happy Gilmore 2 is a legacy sequel to the 1996 comedy, not a reboot. Netflix’s production coverage identifies Kyle Newacheck as director and Tim Herlihy as a co-writer, with returning producers or executive producers from the original film’s creative orbit, including Jack Giarraputo, Robert Simonds and Dennis Dugan. The sequel was filmed in New Jersey.
Newacheck has explained that the timing felt appropriate because interest in golf had renewed while the original character remained culturally durable. The film’s structure follows that logic: it introduces a new family problem and a new rival league but surrounds them with familiar people, objects and jokes.
Netflix’s Easter-egg material identifies callbacks including the in-world Happy Gilmore video game, Happy’s Plymouth Duster, his Bruins jersey and Chubbs Peterson-related material. The sequel also references the original Tour Championship and pays tribute to elements connected with characters and performers from the first movie, including Bob Barker. These details are designed for viewers who know the 1996 film, although the central comeback premise remains easy to follow without remembering every callback.
Is Happy Gilmore 3 confirmed?
No confirmed Happy Gilmore 3 announcement is established in the Netflix release and production material covered here. The sequel’s strong opening may encourage further franchise discussion, but a performance milestone is not the same thing as an official greenlight. Any future continuation should be confirmed through Netflix or the filmmakers rather than assumed from the ending or audience demand.
Sources and freshness notes
Release, runtime, rating, synopsis, cast and production information are based on Netflix’s official title and Tudum materials. Opening-viewing figures come from Netflix’s July 29, 2025 report.
