Happy Gilmore is a 1996 comedy about an unsuccessful hockey player who discovers he can hit a golf ball exceptionally far. He enters professional golf to raise money and save his grandmother’s home, bringing a hockey player’s forceful style to a sport built around restraint.
What is Happy Gilmore about?
Happy Gilmore’s hockey ambitions have stalled, but an unexpected talent gives him another way to earn money: he can drive a golf ball remarkable distances. He takes up golf and competes for tournament prize money, hoping to pay the taxes threatening his grandmother’s house. The official Netflix recap describes the stakes, including Happy’s eventual win and return home.
Happy’s approach is anything but conventional. His aggression and hockey mentality clash with golf’s etiquette, making the course both a sporting arena and a source of comedy. Chubbs Petersen, a retired golfer, mentors him, while publicist Virginia helps him navigate the competition. His chief rival is Shooter McGavin.
Who directed Happy Gilmore, and who is in the cast?
Dennis Dugan directed the 1996 film. Adam Sandler stars as Happy and co-wrote the movie with Tim Herlihy. The cast also includes Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Julie Bowen as Virginia, Frances Bay as Happy’s grandmother, and Carl Weathers as Chubbs Petersen. Allen Covert, Robert Smigel, Bob Barker, Lee Trevino and Kevin Nealon also appear. Universal Pictures lists the film’s runtime as 1 hour 32 minutes and its rating as PG-13 for language and some comic sexuality.

What inspired Happy’s hockey-meets-golf character?
In a 2025 interview with The Associated Press, Sandler connected the premise to his childhood exposure to golf and his friend Kyle McDonough, a hockey player who later turned professional. Sandler said McDonough’s powerful hitting and hockey mentality helped inspire Happy. “So when I started becoming a comedian and me and (Tim) Herlihy were writing stuff and stand-up and talking about movies, I started thinking about a guy who could hit it really big and had a hockey player mentality.”
The film’s memorable taunt, “Are you too good for your home?”, captures its irreverent mix of sports frustration and broad comedy. The Associated Press reported that the original earned $39 million in the United States and Canada; that is a domestic gross, not a worldwide total.

The 2025 sequel is a separate film, not another name for the 1996 original. Netflix’s guide identifies Adam Sandler, Julie Bowen, Ben Stiller and Christopher McDonald among its returning cast, alongside new cast including Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, known as Bad Bunny. Tim Herlihy returns as co-writer, Kyle Newacheck directs, and Dennis Dugan is an executive producer. The AP’s 2025 interview describes a grown Happy being drawn back into golf and reports that Sandler and Herlihy wanted to return to their broad-comedy style.
