That is a national submission—not an Academy nomination or confirmation that the film has reached the shortlist.
What happened in the Battagram cable-car rescue?
In August 2023, eight passengers became stranded in a cable car above a ravine near Battagram in northern Pakistan. All eight were eventually rescued. Geo News described the operation as lasting nearly 12 hours, while the film’s Sundance synopsis frames the crisis around a 10-hour window before the remaining cable was expected to fail. Those are different accounts of the countdown, not a single settled duration. Geo News Sundance Film Festival
Accounts also differ on the passengers’ ages and the height of the cable car. Sundance says six of the eight were schoolboys and places them 900 feet above the ravine; Geo News reports seven schoolboys and around 600 feet, while Dawn Images says six children and 900 feet. The consistent point is that eight people were trapped high above a ravine; the precise height and passenger breakdown should be attributed to a particular account rather than treated as agreed facts. What does Pakistan’s Oscars submission mean?
Dawn Images and Geo News reported on 2 October 2026 that Pakistan selected Hanging by a Wire for submission to the 99th Academy Awards’ Best International Feature Film category. Geo attributed the announcement to Pakistan Academy Selection Committee Deputy Chairperson Sana Zahra Jafri, who said the film captured something “deeply recognisable about us as Pakistanis.” Dawn Images Geo News

A country’s submission is an entry in the Academy’s international-feature process; it does not mean the film has been nominated, won an Oscar, or advanced to the shortlist. The cited reports establish Pakistan’s selection, not a later Academy decision.
How does the documentary tell the story?
The 77-minute feature is a 2026 United States, United Kingdom and Pakistan production, directed by Mohammed Ali Naqvi, who wrote and produced it with Bilal Sami. Sundance lists English, Urdu and Pashto as its languages; Tribeca also identifies it as a 77-minute feature documentary. Sundance Film Festival Tribeca

Archive and reenactments
Rather than relying only on retrospective interviews, the film combines footage recorded by families, bystanders, rescuers and passengers with reenactments. In the official director’s note, Naqvi says people who lived through the rescue performed the reconstructions, including the boys, who helped rebuild the cable car in a controlled studio setting. He describes using staged scenes where existing footage could not convey the fear, confusion or physical strain of the emergency. Official film site
A rescue shaped by local knowledge and official response
The film follows more than the mechanics of getting the passengers out. Its Sundance and Tribeca descriptions place local residents, officials and military responders in the story, and foreground tensions over whose expertise authorities value and the risks communities face when reliable transport infrastructure is lacking. That is the documentary’s framing of the wider context, rather than a standalone finding about infrastructure conditions across Pakistan. Sundance Film Festival Tribeca

Naqvi’s director’s note singles out local zipline daredevil Ali Swati, the mandgaan—translated there as “sky pirate”—Sahib Khan, and district police chief Sonia Shamroz as figures whose cooperation helped make the rescue possible. The film’s emphasis is on people with different forms of experience working together, not on a single rescuer acting alone. Official film site
