Texas offers very different ways to welcome the New Year: free public celebrations, family-friendly daytime events, ticketed parties, fireworks, live music and quieter Hill Country getaways. The places below are ideas for choosing a celebration style—not a confirmed calendar for December 31, 2026. Many Houston-area examples describe the 2025–26 season, so check the linked organizer or tourism calendar for current dates, tickets and rules before making plans.
Choose the kind of New Year’s Eve you want
- For a free public countdown: Start with Austin’s Auditorium Shores celebration or San Antonio’s downtown CelebrateSA; verify this year’s program before traveling.
- For families: Look for Houston-area daytime activities, Kemah Boardwalk, or a family event at the Downtown Aquarium. Prior listings are examples, not confirmation of this year’s events.
- For a party or skyline setting: Previous-season examples include POST Houston’s rooftop event and parties at Houston hotels and museums. Check age restrictions and ticket terms.
- For live music and a small-town trip: Gruene Hall and the Hill Country offer a music-and-historic-district experience. Fredericksburg’s holiday lights and Luckenbach’s January festival suit a seasonal trip, not necessarily a midnight countdown.
Event schedules, venue operations and admission terms can change from year to year. Use current organizer listings to confirm the date, age rules, accessibility, transportation, weather policies and whether reservations are required.
Public celebrations and fireworks
1. Austin — Auditorium Shores and Austin’s New Year
Austin’s annual city celebration is centered on Auditorium Shores. Visit Austin describes it as free and open to the public, with live music, food trucks, family activities and fireworks. The 2025–26 edition also included a drone show, but that is not a confirmed feature for the next celebration. The event guide says a blanket or collapsible single-seat chair may be brought and lists personal fireworks among prohibited items; check the current rules before packing. See Visit Austin’s New Year’s Eve guide and the City of Austin announcement for event information.
2. San Antonio — CelebrateSA downtown
Visit San Antonio describes CelebrateSA as the city’s official annual New Year’s Eve celebration. The free downtown event features music, food, family activities, a countdown and fireworks. Expect busy streets in the central area: check current closures and decide in advance whether to walk, use a ride service or arrange another way back. Visit San Antonio’s annual-events guide is the source for the recurring celebration and holiday-season information.

Houston-area parties, family events and getaways
Houston’s event choices range from family-oriented daytime programs to adults-only parties and hotel celebrations. The examples below come from Visit Houston listings for the 2025–26 season; they help identify the type of experience to look for, but should not be treated as confirmed for 2026–27.
3. Houston — POST Houston
Visit Houston’s previous-season roundup described a downtown rooftop party with DJs, performers, fireworks and skyline views. It is a promising format for a big-city countdown, but check POST Houston’s own current event information before assuming there will be a new edition. Read Visit Houston’s roundup.

4. Houston — Houston Museum of Natural Science
The 2025–26 Mixers & Elixirs listing described a 21-and-older museum party with live music, DJs, food and countdown options. This is an adults-only example rather than a family outing; check the museum’s current event details for age limits, tickets and what admission includes. Visit Houston’s New Year’s Eve listings.
5. Houston — Children’s Museum Houston
A prior listing featured Rockin’ New Year’s Noon, a daytime celebration with a ball drop, performances and hands-on activities, plus a quieter sensory-friendly option. A midday countdown can work well for children who are not staying up until midnight. Confirm whether the museum is offering the event this year and review its current schedule and access information. Check Visit Houston’s event listings.
6. Kemah — Kemah Boardwalk
Visit Houston previously listed free family activities, live music, food and fireworks at Kemah Boardwalk. Before setting out, confirm the current date and operating schedule, and check whether admission or parking terms differ from the prior season. See the Houston event calendar.
7. Houston — Downtown Aquarium
A previous tourism listing described a family celebration with a buffet, balloon drop and children’s contests, with advance reservations. Treat it as a past-season option until the Aquarium posts a current event; check what the reservation covers and whether spaces are available. Visit Houston’s event listings.

8. Galveston — Hotel Lucine
For a seaside overnight, Visit Houston’s 2025–26 roundup described Hotel Lucine hosting dinner and music, followed by a midnight toast and a late-night speakeasy. Confirm the event, lodging dates and reservation details directly before building a trip around it. See the previous-season roundup.
9. The Woodlands — The Woodlands Resort
The prior-season roundup described a resort staycation with dinner, a band, a countdown and a DJ. That makes the resort worth checking for travelers who want lodging and a celebration in one place, but the described program is not confirmation of a new event. Review current package and event terms before booking. Visit Houston’s roundup.

Visit Houston’s 2025–26 roundup described a late-night hotel party with a DJ, photo booth, dancing and a midnight toast. This is a venue idea, not a confirmed current event; check the hotel’s latest listing for schedule, tickets and any age or dress requirements. Read the tourism roundup.
11. Houston — La Colombe d’Or
The same previous-season roundup described a dressed-up mansion party with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a DJ and dancing. Verify whether it returns and check current ticket, dress and timing guidance before making plans. See Visit Houston’s roundup.

12. Dallas — downtown and city entertainment
Visit Dallas’s 2025–26 listing showed a mix of dinner, concert, zoo-light outing and seasonal attractions. The available event information does not establish specific hours, fireworks or which activities will be available for the next New Year’s Eve. Use the current official calendar to choose an event and confirm details. Check Visit Dallas’s New Year’s Eve listing.
13. Gruene and New Braunfels — Gruene Hall and Historic District
Gruene’s historic district, between Austin and San Antonio, pairs dining and live music with the well-known Gruene Hall. TourTexas describes a traditional New Year’s Eve at the hall, but the performer, ticket terms and schedule depend on the year. Check the venue’s current calendar before traveling. Explore TourTexas’s Gruene guide and its New Braunfels guide.

These towns are better suited to a broader holiday-season getaway than a guaranteed midnight countdown. TourTexas describes Fredericksburg’s Christmas Nights of Lights as running from Thanksgiving week into early January, and Luckenbach’s annual Blues Festival as taking place in January. Those seasonal offerings can anchor a trip around New Year’s, but the source does not establish a midnight event in either place. Check TourTexas’s Fredericksburg events guide and confirm current schedules with the organizers.
