Steve Jobs’s family continued welcoming trick-or-treaters to its Palo Alto home on Halloween 2011, weeks after Jobs died. Later accounts describe an increasingly elaborate display, and the Palo Alto Museum said in 2025 that the tradition continued. Those reports do not establish that an event is taking place in 2026.
What happened at the home in 2011?
Children had been welcomed at the Jobs family home for years, according to an Associated Press report carried by CBS News on November 1, 2011. That Halloween was the first after Steve Jobs died on October 5. The family continued the tradition.
CBS/AP reported that about 50 children waited for the gate to open at 6:30 p.m. The scene included costumed visitors, bags of candy, jack-o’-lanterns, fog and thunder effects from hidden speakers. AppleInsider’s contemporaneous summary of San Jose Mercury News coverage also described synthetic fog and thunder.
The event had a neighborhood-scale feel in those accounts. Local resident Bob Kocher told the San Jose Mercury News, as quoted by AppleInsider, “It’s a wonderful testament to Steve Jobs and his family. My daughters will be talking about this for the rest of the year.”

How did the tradition continue after Jobs’s death?
In a first-person Houston Chronicle account published in 2015 and updated in 2016, former neighborhood child Margaret Kadifa recalled that her mother sent her a photograph of the decorated yard and a line of trick-or-treaters after Jobs died. Kadifa wrote that the house had been open to trick-or-treaters every year since his death. She also remembered receiving Odwalla bars as a child. These are personal recollections, not a complete year-by-year event record.
The Palo Alto Museum’s April 17, 2025, local-history article likewise said the tradition continued after Jobs’s death. It did not identify a particular year’s event or provide logistics.

What changed by 2019?
The Washington Post’s November 1, 2019, report described a more elaborate Halloween production outside the home, put on by Laurene Powell Jobs. It reported set pieces, actors, lighting, stagehands and candy, as well as permits for a noise exemption, a special event and a road closure. The article attributed an estimate of roughly 3,000 attendees in recent years to a Palo Alto police spokesperson; that is not a verified headcount for Halloween 2019.
The 2011 and 2019 accounts depict different years and formats: one describes a haunted-garden-style neighborhood stop, while the later report covers a staged production. They do not establish that the event followed the same format or scale every year. The Washington Post also reported on other Halloween displays in Palo Alto, which should not be confused with the Jobs family tradition.

Is the event happening in 2026?
The cited reporting does not verify a 2026 event. The Palo Alto Museum’s 2025 statement supports the broader history of continuity, but it is not confirmation of a specific event this year. Treat current-year status as unconfirmed unless a reliable, current announcement says otherwise.

The interest in the tradition comes from its documented place in local history, not from the home being a public attraction. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2012 that neighbors sought to protect the family’s privacy. The residence should not be treated as a place to visit: do not enter the property, photograph residents, or disrupt the neighborhood.
