It is a story about a movie prop—not evidence that Michael Myers was a real person.
Was Michael Myers’ mask really William Shatner’s face?
Yes. The original mask used for Michael Myers was a modified William Shatner/Captain Kirk mask, according to the American Film Institute’s catalog account and a Library of Congress film essay. The familiar face was altered until it seemed strikingly blank and unsettling.
How Tommy Lee Wallace changed the mask
AFI credits production designer and art director Tommy Lee Wallace with creating the original Michael Myers mask. He widened its eye holes, altered the hair, and painted it pale blue. Those changes muted the recognizable details of Shatner’s face and helped turn a commercial character mask into the ghostly visage associated with the killer.
The Library of Congress essay says the modified William Shatner mask cost two dollars. It also describes Halloween as having a budget of around $320,000 and having been shot in 21 days in 1978; these are production figures reported in that essay, whose available record does not state a year for those figures.

What the surviving-mask story adds
A retrospective account from StarTrek.com recounts illustrator Rick Sternbach’s experience during production of Halloween II in 1981. Sternbach found a remaining original mask marked Don Post Studios and a model number. The article says he contacted the manufacturer and was told it was the Captain Kirk mask. This is a later-recounted production anecdote, rather than a contemporaneous production record.
The same StarTrek.com article recounts Shatner discussing wearing a Michael Myers mask while trick-or-treating with his daughters. That detail is part of the article’s account; it does not change the mask’s documented production history.

What is—and is not—known about the mask’s origins
The sources identify the mask as a Captain Kirk/Shatner mask, but they do not settle exactly when or in what production context Shatner’s face was cast for the commercial mask. The available evidence does not establish whether the cast originated during Star Trek or another production, so that more specific origin should not be treated as fact.
Halloween was directed by John Carpenter, produced by Debra Hill, and written by Carpenter and Hill. Carpenter’s official site lists the film’s release date as October 25, 1978: the official film page. The film and its mask are real; Michael Myers is a fictional character, not a real-life killer established by this story.

Why the mask became so recognizable
The design’s power lies in the distance between its familiar origin and its finished appearance. Wallace’s changes stripped away much of the commercial mask’s recognizable character, leaving a pale, featureless face that could read as human without offering much expression. AFI notes that the ghostly white mask went on to become a staple Halloween mask sold in costume stores.
