Full-manga spoilers: This ranking covers the complete manga, including developments beyond the animated story. Tobio Kageyama takes the top spot: he leads the available six-attribute profile comparison and pairs that all-around score with elite setting and on-court impact. The list is an editorial ranking, not an official Haikyu!! order.

How this ranking works

The baseline is a fan project’s transcription of manga character profiles: six attributes—power, jumping, stamina, game sense, technique and speed—each scored from 1 to 5 and added for a total out of 30. The table gives Kageyama 27, Kōrai Hoshiumi 26 and Atsumu Miya 25. Those totals are useful evidence, not a publisher-issued ranking. The profiles tie several players at 24 and 23, so the order below also weighs position-specific skills, performance against strong opponents, consistency and team value. See the Haikyuudle character stats table.

Comparing a setter with a libero or middle blocker is not a direct like-for-like measurement: each position solves different problems. This is an all-around judgment across the full manga, not a claim that one role is inherently more valuable. Haruichi Furudate’s series begins with Hinata’s defeat by the talented “King of the Court,” Kageyama, and Hinata’s pursuit of volleyball at Karasuno, as summarized on Shueisha’s official series page.

The 10 best Haikyu!! players

1. Tobio Kageyama — setter

Kageyama earns the top position through the strongest profile total in the comparison, 27/30, and the unusual breadth of his setting. His precision and ability to adapt delivery to a hitter make him more than a technically gifted setter: he can turn a teammate’s strengths into an attack the defense has difficulty reading. His early reputation as the “King of the Court” reflects how his control could become domineering; his growth is learning to use that control in service of a team. That combination of high baseline score, specialized craft and development gives him the clearest case for number one.

2. Kōrai Hoshiumi — outside hitter

Hoshiumi’s 26/30 is the second-highest displayed total. As an outside hitter, he has to contribute across attacking and back-row play, and his game makes his compact stature a poor shortcut for judging his reach or threat. He brings a broad set of skills rather than depending on a single scoring route, which makes him an especially strong all-around player. Kageyama has the higher profile total and more central control of a rally; Hoshiumi is close behind because of his versatility and ability to affect multiple phases.

3. Atsumu Miya — setter

Atsumu scores 25/30 and is one of the manga’s most dangerous setters. His serving adds a direct scoring threat, while his range of setting choices gives attackers opportunities to exploit a defense. He is ranked below Kageyama because the latter has the higher profile total and a stronger overall case for controlling and elevating a team’s offense. The gap is not a declaration that every team would prefer one setter: their temperaments and the players around them matter.

4. Wakatoshi Ushijima — opposite hitter

Ushijima’s case is built around a defining attacking weapon: a powerful left-handed hit that forces opponents to organize their defense around stopping him. His impact is clearest in his role as a high-volume finisher, rather than in a balanced contribution across every skill. That makes him one of the most imposing attackers in the story, though an all-around ranking places versatile players above him. His displayed profile total is 23/30, tied with several others in the table.

5. Kiyoomi Sakusa — outside hitter

Sakusa combines a formidable attack with a reputation for careful, disciplined play. As an outside hitter, his value is not limited to scoring; he must also remain useful as the rally shifts into reception and defense. The profile table gives him 23/30, the same total as Ushijima and other players, so this placement comes from editorial comparison of role, skill set and demonstrated threat—not from the total alone.

6. Kōtarō Bokuto — outside hitter

Bokuto’s attacking ability can change the shape of a match, and his high-energy style makes him a visible focal point for his team. He is listed at 24/30 in the profile comparison, tied with Osamu Miya and Oikawa. His position here reflects the value and ceiling of his offense alongside the variability the story attaches to his performance. A hitter who can dominate stretches of play is not automatically the most consistent all-around choice.

7. Tōru Oikawa — setter

Oikawa also has a displayed total of 24/30. His strength as a setter is not simply delivering a technically clean ball; he studies opponents and works to bring the best out of the hitters available to him. That tactical awareness and ability to shape a team’s attack keep him among the strongest players. He ranks behind the three setters above because their combination of profile totals and individual weapons makes a more compelling case in this cross-position list.

8. Kiyoomi Kiryū — outside hitter

Kiryū is a powerful attacker who can still make a difference when the ball is imperfect or the situation is difficult. The profile table places him at 23/30, a shared total that does not by itself distinguish him from several other contenders. His position in the ranking recognizes the value of his scoring threat and resilience without treating a single standout trait as proof that he outranks players with broader influence on the game.

9. Shinsuke Kita — outside hitter

Kita’s value is less about spectacular highlights than reliability, preparation and keeping a team composed. He is not the kind of player whose case rests on being the hardest hitter or the most explosive athlete. Instead, he demonstrates how consistency and sound decisions help a team perform as a unit. That makes him a worthwhile inclusion in a ranking that considers team usefulness as well as raw profile attributes, even though the available table does not place him among its top totals.

10. Yū Nishinoya — libero

Nishinoya rounds out the list as a specialist whose defensive work can keep an attack alive and change the momentum of a rally. A libero’s contribution cannot be fairly judged by counting the same kinds of scoring actions used to evaluate an opposite or outside hitter. Nishinoya’s position is included because receiving and defense are essential to a team’s ability to build an offense, not because every player can be reduced to one shared metric. His displayed profile total is 23/30.

What the profile totals do—and do not—show

The figures help anchor comparisons, but they cannot settle every argument about who is best. A 24/30 tie does not establish that Bokuto, Osamu Miya and Oikawa are interchangeable, nor does a 23/30 tie create a meaningful order among Sakusa, Ushijima, Kiryū and Nishinoya. The transcription presents profile attributes; it does not claim to calculate an official combined ranking. For role-specific comparisons, assess setters on setting and tactical control, attackers on scoring and shot options, middle blockers on blocking and quick attacks, and liberos on reception and defense.

Read the full manga for the complete comparison

This list includes the full manga rather than only events adapted in the anime, so readers who want to avoid later-story spoilers should stop before the ranking. Shueisha lists collected volumes through volume 45 on its official Haikyu!! series page; that is a useful endpoint for readers seeking the complete story in print. Separately, the official Haikyu!! portal reports cumulative manga circulation above 75 million copies, without stating a year for that figure on the page.
