Habib Painter’s route to qawwali began with billboard painting in Aligarh. A patron helped him form a troupe and brought him to recitals in Delhi, where his Sufi-influenced performances made him known beyond his original trade. The account of his career comes chiefly from a 2016 Scroll profile, so claims about his honors and personal history are attributed to that reporting.
From painting billboards in Aligarh to performing qawwali
Scroll reports that Painter was born in 1915 and began his working life painting billboards in Aligarh. A patron helped establish a qawwali troupe for him and arranged performances in the city. Painter later travelled to Delhi for recitals, carrying his music from local stages into a wider performance circuit. Scroll’s 2016 profile is the principal account of this transition.

The profile opens with the imagined possibility of Painter humming while he worked on a billboard. It is a suggestive image, not a documented event; what the account establishes is the sequence of trades and performances, not that he sang while painting.
How Sufi poetry shaped his repertoire
Painter’s qawwali was strongly influenced by Sufism. Scroll identifies Amir Khusro’s poetry as an important part of his repertoire and describes Painter as a disciple of Hazrat Nizamuddin. One example is “Bahut Kathin Hai Dagar Panghat Ki,” a Khusro poem dedicated to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya. In Painter’s interpretation, the familiar image of a woman going to fetch water also became a way to reflect on the search for meaning.

His repertoire was not limited to devotional themes. Scroll describes “Yahaan Se Chala Gaya Bhagwan” as a critique of God’s absence. Song-title spellings can vary across transliterations and catalog listings, so these titles follow the spellings used in the profile.
What is known about the title “Bulbul-E-Hind”
According to Scroll’s 2016 profile, Painter’s qawwalis were popular with Indian troops during the 1962 conflict with China. The profile says his music reached Jawaharlal Nehru’s attention and that Nehru bestowed the title “Bulbul-E-Hind.” This account should be understood as Scroll’s reported version: the available evidence here does not independently confirm the episode.

Film-industry invitations, but no cinema singing
Scroll says Painter did not sing for cinema, although people from the film industry invited him to private musical gatherings. The distinction matters: invitations to private soirees do not establish that he recorded or performed on a film soundtrack.
His final years and continuing legacy
The profile dates Painter’s death to February 22, 1987, and says he had performed with his troupe for nearly 50 years. It also reports that his son, Anees Painter, continued the family’s musical legacy. These biographical details, including the length of his performing career, are reported by Scroll rather than independently verified here.
