The familiar live quiz app ran scheduled games in its active years, but its timetable, chat controls, extra-life rules, and cash-out terms below are historical—not instructions for a current service.
Later reporting identifies November 17, 2022, as the last ordinary game. AppleCensorship reported that in September 2026 it had found the app unavailable in all 175 App Store storefronts it checked. No official statement establishing a present-day revival or confirming a final shutdown was found in the sources cited here.
What time did HQ Trivia go live?
In the schedule described by the historical iMore FAQ, games generally aired at 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern on weekdays and 9 p.m. Eastern on weekends. That was not a fixed schedule even while the app was running: on June 25, 2018, HQ announced a trial with weekday games at 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. Eastern. The iMore page reproduced HQ’s update: “We’re trying out some new times to play HQ so there will be no 3p ET game today.” These times describe past programming, not a current broadcast schedule. iMore’s historical FAQ recounts both schedules.
How did HQ Trivia work?
HQ Trivia was a live mobile quiz. In the version described by the historical FAQ, a host presented 12 multiple-choice questions, each with a short answer window. A wrong answer—or failing to answer in time—eliminated a player unless they used an available extra life. Players who answered all 12 correctly split the prize with the other remaining winners; getting a perfect score did not guarantee a large individual payout because the prize was shared. TIME’s 2017 account describes the live format and a ten-second answer window at that time.

- In contrast to traditional trivia formats, you don't receive points for answering questions correctly. Instead, points are subtracted for every incorrect answer!
- Contains 110 cards with more than 400 questions about things that you should know
- An addictively entertaining trivia game where it will only be a matter of time before you hear yourself say ahhh!... I should have known that!
How do I get rid of the chat?
The historical iMore FAQ’s instruction was to swipe right over the chat area during a game. That describes the app interface at the time; current interface behavior cannot be confirmed.
How did extra lives work?
Using an extra life
Under the rules documented by the historical FAQ, a player could use one extra life in a game to avoid elimination after a wrong or unanswered question. This was a choice within the game, not a way to reverse the answer or guarantee a win.

Getting an extra life through referrals
The FAQ described a referral reward after an invited new player used the referral code and played a first game. HQ’s Season 3 post described extra lives and Super Spins as referral rewards, along with season-specific rewards such as a free pass at each new level. Its exact wording was: “If your friend has already played the game of HQ you’re referring them to, you’ll get your Extra Life/Super Spin instantly!” These mechanics applied to that season and are not evidence that referrals or rewards function now. HQ Trivia’s Season 3 post.
How did players get their money?
The FAQ said winnings were held in an HQ account linked to PayPal. Its January 2018 update reported that HQ had changed its cash-out policy: winners could transfer any amount immediately, removing a previous $20 minimum. Those were the terms described at that time; they do not establish that an account, balance, or payout channel remains accessible today. The FAQ does not establish a representative prize amount, and individual shares depended on how many players won.

Could players improve their chances?
Players had to read each question carefully and answer before the timer expired. The questions were designed to be challenging, and a correct-answer streak could still end with an incorrect answer or timeout. Because all remaining perfect-score players shared the prize, there was no guaranteed strategy for winning or for receiving a particular amount. TIME’s coverage discusses the question-writing and game format.

Available evidence does not confirm an active official service. Game Developer reported in 2020 that HQ Trivia shut down after a planned acquisition fell through. Later coverage records that the game returned, so the 2020 report alone does not describe its final period of operation. A 2023 retrospective identifies November 17, 2022, as the last ordinary show, but that is secondary reporting rather than an official final-shutdown announcement. The Verge’s retrospective gives that date.

AppleCensorship’s App Store monitoring page documents those observations. No current official game schedule, active official download listing, or official revival statement is established by these sources.
